Crossing state lines with firearm

Going to North Carolina in a few days with the family. Wondering if I'd be legal carrying a handgun with me in car.

great info above. Connect the states as you travel. If you go into a state that does not honor it...put it in the trunk until you get in a state that does.

Research each state you will be traveling through. If going through Alabama I don't believe you can carry in a vehicle like you can in MS. I expected the law in AL to be a little more lax than it is (unless things have recently changed).

In Alabama you have to have conceal permit to carry in vehicle like OP is stating. I know my Alabama permit has other states on the back that allow carry with the Alabama permit.

That is a MS interpretation. Some other states absolutely do not see the vehicle as an extension of the home. Study up before you travel.

My question is if you can not transport a firearm in your vehicle how do you transport one? I would assume as long as it is unloaded and cased you would be fine.

Unloaded, separate from bullets and locked. If not able to lock then as far away as it can be and bullets on opposite side. That is my understanding.

I saw an interview once where a guy was moving to a new state and traveled through Illinoiss. He got pulled over for a traffic violation of some sort. They searched his car and found some ammo then tore apart all his packed boxes and found an unloaded pistol and he got locked up for over a year.

It's a felony in Illinois to even have a hand gun in your vehicle. We go Deer Hunting up there every year and didn't know this until this year. Glad we didn't get pulled over. It sucks to be stupid/naive of the law I guess. I don't understand why we can't have a pistol in our car to protect ourselves.
