Crossing state lines with firearm
Going to North Carolina in a few days with the family. Wondering if I'd be legal carrying a handgun with me in car.
Re: Crossing state lines with firearm
NC honors our CC permit according to handgunlaw.us

You may have to avoid SC. I know they don't honor CCP from MS...

great info above. Connect the states as you travel. If you go into a state that does not honor it...put it in the trunk until you get in a state that does.
Re: Crossing state lines with firearm
Why is there not some course/training and permit you can get so that this isn't a problem?

Its worth studing up on.
I had a nurse friend who was in PA. He was driving a Z71 Ms tag with BFG tires....got pulled over, gun in truck, arrested and held for 3 days. Almost lost his RN lic. due to the charge for having a gun with no CCP was a felony. Took alot of strings to get him home.

This.
Research each state you will be traveling through. If going through Alabama I don't believe you can carry in a vehicle like you can in MS. I expected the law in AL to be a little more lax than it is (unless things have recently changed).

Re: Crossing state lines with firearm
In Alabama you have to have conceal permit to carry in vehicle like OP is stating. I know my Alabama permit has other states on the back that allow carry with the Alabama permit.
Alabama pistol permit reciprocity states:
Alaska
Arizona
Arkansas
Colorado
Florida
Georgia
Idaho
Indiana
Kentucky
Louisisana
Michigan
Mississippi
Missouri
New Hampshire
North Carolina
North Dakota
Oklahoma
South Dakota
Tennessee
Texas
Utah
Wyoming

So are y'all saying that the common statement "your vehicle is an extension of your home" only applies in your home state?

Re: Crossing state lines with firearm
That is a MS interpretation. Some other states absolutely do not see the vehicle as an extension of the home. Study up before you travel.eSJay wrote:So are y'all saying that the common statement "your vehicle is an extension of your home" only applies in your home state?
Never assume.

Re: Crossing state lines with firearm
My question is if you can not transport a firearm in your vehicle how do you transport one? I would assume as long as it is unloaded and cased you would be fine.
Re: Crossing state lines with firearm
Unloaded, separate from bullets and locked. If not able to lock then as far away as it can be and bullets on opposite side. That is my understanding.

I saw an interview once where a guy was moving to a new state and traveled through Illinoiss. He got pulled over for a traffic violation of some sort. They searched his car and found some ammo then tore apart all his packed boxes and found an unloaded pistol and he got locked up for over a year.huntsober wrote:Its worth studing up on.

Illinois, what a joke. From the Huffington Post in June 2012......."As WBEZ reports, while some 2,000 U.S. troops have been killed in Afghanistan since 2001, more than 5,000 people have been killed by gun fire in Chicago during that time, based on Department of Defense and FBI data."BBR12 wrote:I saw an interview once where a guy was moving to a new state and traveled through Illinoiss. Re: Crossing state lines with firearm
It's a felony in Illinois to even have a hand gun in your vehicle. We go Deer Hunting up there every year and didn't know this until this year. Glad we didn't get pulled over. It sucks to be stupid/naive of the law I guess. I don't understand why we can't have a pistol in our car to protect ourselves.
