I did what I always wanted to do...get an education degree, teach (14 yrs), coach some (5 yrs), get advanced degrees (3), taught some in college, worked in ed. leadership, and retired (58)! It was tough in the beginning and getting the degrees while working full time and having a family (wife was in ed too). We sacrificed and moved to another state to get the best teaching positions we could find in the south. The money never seemed to equal what our friends in businesses made, but we were never without and our kids have everything they needed and most of what they wanted. We had holidays off to visit family and hunt a little. My wife had every summer off to be with the kids. I stuck it out and worked hard, developed relationships and did a job I was always proud of.

I ain't bragging (well kinda), but in retirement, my wife and I are very comfortable, have no debt, have all the money we really need and are able to be generous with our kids and the church. I have to admit, my wife has been the architect of most of the finances. Without her, I probably wouldn't have a cent. But, we were willing to sacrifice early on to realize the max benefit a little later. I am proud of the legacy that I left in my school system and state. My wife was a well respected professor at a large community college, and my kids have thrived here and each has an advanced degree now.

I really don't think I would change a thing other than I would change how I reacted or did some things as part of it.

Coaching or teaching seems to keep alot of people young at heart. Never entered my mind 20 years ago, but do not think it would be a bad occupation. I like what I do now for that matter. Farming and conservation work go hand in hand fairly well. Besides wanting more $$$, I am satisfied with what I do.

growing up on a farm, i was always thrown off when someone said that farmers were the worst conservationist in the free world....raping the land by cutting down all the trees to make farmland, gross misuse of chemicals, etc from environmental fruit nuts.
why would someone who makes thier living off of the land (nature), not want to do the most in the name of conservation, that they could....their living depends on the resources being there year after year after year...

fruit nuts....aka sierra club, pita, green peace, tree huggers

I would go to Nursing School. You can go to school for two years and become a RN. An RN can make $40M+ and maybe only work 2 or 3 days a week, with paid time off and benefits. This would give you plenty of time and money to live-it-up and hunting like we all want to. Then or later, You can get your Bachelor's degree in about another year while still working/playing/hunting/raising kids and then a get a Nurse practicioner (SP) in about another year, again while still working/playing/hunting/raising kids.

Bottom line, Good money, lots of time off, good benefits, lots of time off, ability to keep advancing later in life without much sacrifice, and lots of time off.

My wife is a RN. I make more than she does, but if she put in the number of hours I do, she would make damned good money. AND SHE COULD.

In high school and in college, they have career days and etc. But no one ever tells you, this person can make this much money and only work this many hours, with this much education.

+1
plus even though you say you wouldnt want to live in another state, you could do travel nursing get paid living and make alot more than you would in ms, and still only work 2-4 days and be in a state where the hunting is better and be back by summer to do your aquatic business

I did exactly what you did took criminal justice because it was interesting and have a minor in sociology. Got out of college and got to looking at pay and wondering WTH have I been doing the last 5-6 years ha-ha. Luckily tho I had been in sales all threw school and got my foot in the door at insurance and love it work for a great company and my motto is work hard play hard. This will show come October the 1st when deer season open.
Like Tombstone said I regret not going into the military. And like Huntersmky said about out of state I have recently looked at transferring to North Carolina and could prolly stay with same company with great pay but I am not sure I can leave my hunting land and what few friends that are left behind.

All this to say you have a degree in CJ it don’t mean you have have a career in that field.

I love my job (most times). I'm an RN in an ED with 7 yrs. experience. It's stressful, but that's most jobs. Made 84K last year, but I do work a lot: 8 nights out of 14, then take some time off for hunting. I could cut back to 7 shifts and still make 65K+. Working on my BS online, and should be a nurse-practitioner in a few yrs. (better pay and fewer shifts).
you did put in the plug, right?

Dentist...no doubt. I am a banker and see all the income statments. Med doctors work to many hours. Only a few attorneys make good money. Good sales people burn out and usually have million $ appetites with $100K incomes and piss poor managment skills. And the $ ain't in banking...
Dentist work 4 days a week, until there about 45 then 3 days a week. Work in an office with good looking women. No denist I know is on call and has to come to the hospital at 3 in the AM and after they get thier school debt knocked out they can been about 40 making $400K plus. It is getting harder to get into dental school though...

I would love to do all those things but unfortunately I want to make a living too. I have plenty of fun and stay out of trouble. The drinking, well I enjoy it too much as it is. I wouldn't mind doing something crazy for a little while but I think I am to the point that I need to focus more on what I want to do for the rest of my life.
