everyone seems to get bigger and bigger decoys. magnums, super magnums and the like. Not me. I bought a bunch of tiny decoys. So when the ducks fly over they think, wow, we must be REALLY high. They drop down, and we whack em. Plus, you can carry 2 dozen in a coat pocket, 150 in a decoy bag. Really small decoys seem to move in a lot less wind as well.
Also, always put an odd number of decoys. If you put out 12, 6 drakes and 6 hens, you'll only get sidekick or needy ducks. By putting out 11 or 13, you can get playa ducks, looking to cut the unattached hens out of the flock.
I like to put my decoys out in 2 distinct groups. The left group in a big D pattern. The right group in a U pattern. When the ducks come by, we shoot em in the pocketbooks.
If all else fails, try the single white decoy in the middle of your spread. If that fails, try the single black decoy in the middle of your spread. travis

You know what, that fish thing aint a bad idea, bait your decoys like jugs and watch em come alive!! Fish and duck hunt all at the same time!!!!
I never use more than 2 dozen with 6 to 12 on Jerk strings! You get em coming close and give a couple quacks and hit that jerk string and they'll lock dat booty up and drop like a brick! To hell with a spinner!!! Too much trouble!

Re: Decoy Spreads????
Thats pretty good.
On another note when your hunting a pit in the center of a field do you always put dekes all around the pit or do you block the side with the down wind to hunt? I have always drawn more to the timber myself as pit hunting isn't my favorite but thats where I find myself for now atleast. We have always just put them on both but just thought I would get some other thoughts. Figure if its where they want to be it won't matter.

Place the dekes on both sides of you with a nice landing spot in the middle and spread a few on the sides and back as well but give plenty room for landing in front of you

Helz i wasn't playing i have heard of people back in the 60s that really did that but i am not sure if it's legal anymore. i know using live ducks isn't it may or may not fall under that catergory.
Re: Decoy Spreads????
i always put them in small groups of 3 or 4. I usually have 5 groups or more with 10-12 ft lanes between each little group. Put your spinners furthest out from where you hunt or one far and one near. If you think about what the ducks are seeing from the air, I believe this spread looks fairly real to em. But hell I've been huntin with 4 shells and a jerk string and limited out! It just depends on where you are and what the wind is doing.
