Decoy Spreads????

Postby duckdigler » Sun Nov 16, 2008 7:44 pm

We typically hunt four dozen dekes and leave a hole in the middle. What do you guys do for your spreads? Not looking for the best apread, just options.

Depends upon how big the water I'm hunting is. Yesterday I hunted a large flat in the marsh and used 3 large sacks of decoys. The day before I hunted a pot hole and used a dozen. Just depends upon how many birds are using the area I'm hunting and how big it is. I almost always leave a hole where I want the birds to land.

This is one of those questions that really cant have a solid answer because it depends on where you are at?

I tend to normally set mine in a U-shaped pattern, and sometimes use anywhere from 12-32 decoys, but it's like some of the guys posted above, just depends on the conditions, what the ducks want to do, and where, and how your hunting.

only four dozen? I use 16 hundred in a spot only 30x30 yrds, sounds to me you need to step it up. There is also a beaver dam nearby I put 13 goose decoys on top of it. Also climb a dead timber to mount my owl decoy, and hell while I am at it stick a deer decoy in the middle of the spread just in case one them schits get brave, KILL EM ALL!!!

I usually do a U or J shaped spread...number of decoys just depends on how much work you want to do that day. Like everyone has said, depends on how the birds are working.

To heck with the bream... I use a drop hook and a hotdog. catfish gets on them and they really come alive.
