How do you handle this

Postby tunica » Mon Oct 20, 2003 5:51 am

In Theory: You spend a few days clearing willows from a duck hole you hunted for 15 years. You have felled all the new growth and stacked tied the willows into bundles for dragging. You come back to do more work and low and behold someone is dragging a blind into your spot. Now you have a issue its clear to a blindman someone has been working on the hole and its also apparent that its not the work of a super beaver either.

Yea, your first thoughts are beat the stew out of that fella but come on does that solve the problem....so what would you do besides fight.

Let's hope for the best-- Some people will "trudge on" w/ their agenda until confronted. They won't offer much resistance... So, get in their face at first opprtunity and by all means keep working on the spot as if you ain't going to swerve in this game of chicken.

assuming this is public land..........

just as go24 stated, keep working on your hole, preparing it for opening morning. Then ensure you beat him to "his" blind opening morning and enjoy your hunt.
Don't be stupid, you idiot.

Man do I know what you mean.

We have a hole that we have been hunting since the late 70’s. The hole will grow up in water weed so fast that we have to spend an entire weekend cleaning out the hole. 5 of us will go out there with rakes and open the hole up several weeks before the season and to get into the hole we will have to rake a path out.
The place is absolutely covered up with water weed so bad that you can’t hunt anywhere around it and we have weaved in and out of tall button brush so that it is not obvious to find and we still have people to come in and try to hunt next to us. Really pisses me off..

Some have beaten us to the hole and we tend to leave them alone but they will have to spend the night to get there first again.

Sad part is that most everyone knows we hunt there but the past few years some younger boys have decided to try and beat us on several occasions. They know we made the hole and they know we hunt it daily. Yet they will continue to try and beat us.

I just could not do that to another set of hunters. I always try to give them their space and if I know they made the hole what it is or it would not be there I stay clear unless they tell me they are not going to be there.

People just don’t give a crap about the other guy anymore it is all about what is good for them. Seen it too many times. It sucks…

And believe me when I tell you it is not all young people. Some of the worse battles out there were with grown men in their late 30’s and 40’s. Good lord what has this world come to?

I am with ya Duckmen, so of the worst altercations I have been involved in associated with duck hunting have been with grown men that were 35+ years old. In most cases I feel that just the fact that you would question them is somewhat of an insult and embarrasses them infront of their peers. Just my .02 cents.

I'm going to play devil's advocate. But first of all, I'll say that I'm glad I have a lease and don't have to worry about all of that. Now that I've said that, I'll ask a question. Are you saying that since you've hunted a spot on public land for "15 years", it is your spot and someone who is just getting into the sport doesn't have the right to hunt "your spot" on supposedly public land? It doesn't seem quite right if you ask me. I understand that you spent a lot of effort in preparing the hole, but it is public land. My personal philosophy for public land is somewhat close to that of duckmen although someone would have spend the night to beat me to "my hole" in the first place. To answer you're original question though, I'd make sure I beat them to the hole and I'd hunt where I wanted to whether it was in "their blind" or right next to it (notice that I said if I beat them there). If they beat me to the spot, I'd hunt somewhere else and make sure they didn't beat me there again!!! Just my 2 cents.

I just wanted to add one more thing about public land. What does really tick me off is what was mentioned above. If I get to a spot first and someone comes in later and sets up on top of my group, that really, really ticks me off!!! :x :x :x

The point I was trying to make is not that I'm or anyone else is claiming public land based on they've hunted the same place for x years. it was
Someone is working to make or clear a spot fresh signs of this and someone decides to take your work for there own. I understand that public means its open to all. Days gone by hunters would honor something like that and find their own place not wait till someone did or is doing all the work and then jump in and try to build a blind on your work.

Just like when someone sits on a lake or river listening to the gunshots and decides to setup so they can catch your birds as they swing in.
Just like everyone else has said you may beat ME to my setup today but try tomorrow.

Honor is something very few people display nowadays. To many people are just worried about KILL, KILL, KILL, no matter what it takes. I agree that people can hunt in close proximity and not affect one another if both parties act accordingly. But, the one thing that really irks me is when I have ducks trying to work me and a group of kids 200 yards away see it and start blaring away and end up spooking everything in two counties. Now the bigger infraction is setting up where you totally cut somebody off from incoming birds that they have called in--that calls for pepper action.
