ask duck south

Postby Wildfowler » Mon Sep 12, 2011 7:14 am

If I am using my smartphone to browse web sites, am I inadvertently allowing my cellphone number to be captured for tele marketing purposes?

If so, how do I turn this feature off?

Thank you

Your phones browser runs different than your computer. That keeps it safe from the telemarketers and safe from viruses. Whatever kind of smartphone you have you will have apps in itunes/market that are anti-virus stuff. You can find free ones if it makes you feel safer just download one of thoses, but it will kill your battery faster because it is always running. So in short like LODI says no.

I'd be more worried about unsecured Bluetooth and stored data

I wonder where all these telemarketers are getting my cellphone number from recently?

Driving me crazy

If you enter it on websites who do not agree to protect your information such as address, phone number, etc... they have the option to sell the info to 3rd parties for "marketing purposes."

Read the agreements

I never enter my real phone number online for ordering or any other reason. They are not getting my phone number that way, they are calling someone else.

I've always had virtually 0 telemarketing calls to my cell phone until just recently

Do y'all remember me asking this question?

These SOB's do have the way to get a mobile number without me submitting it.

When prompted to log on to Facebook to view a profile it pre-populated my correct cell number.

No wonder I get so many telemarketing phone calls. How in the world can you screen against this from an iPhone?

Thanks.

Edit: I do have a Facebook account that I haven't logged in to in a long time. Years?

I never loaded the Facebook app on my now two year old replacement cell phone.

  I do that too. But to make sure that it is accepted as a legitimate number, I use a '601' area code. Did you know that (601) 987-1234 is a real number for the Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol? Lord, forgive me for that, and be with the pigmies in Africa.
