Pintail push?

Postby Wingman » Mon Jan 10, 2011 9:44 am

Started seeing sprigs on Friday and a bunch more today. First I've seen since Thanksgiving.

A guest of ours killed a drake banded in Alaska in 2010 yesterday. I don't know how to post pics, but it was pretty cool. We saw a ton of pintails all weekend. Most weary, but a few came in with mallards.

Saw a lot yesterday and killed a couple. Found them willing to decoy a little better than usual.

So the mallards were towing them in because they were so tired? Pretty amazing.

Killed a blue wing teal in Jackson county Alabama the other day... Thought it was very strange, first one I've ever killed during big duck season. Green wings sure, blue wings who would've thunk it...

Interesting ya'll are seeing less of them also. Down at the mouth of the river where I hunt that is our bar none king bird. Often times you will kill your limit on sprigs in the first 5 minutes and through out the hunt have upwards of 500 pintail swimming in the decoys. We were all very excited about 2 pintail/person this year. However it's been by far the worst year we have ever seen for pintail. I think our kill at the camp is around 70 pintail this year where with a one pintail limit it's normally 150-200 by this time. I wonder what's going on with them.

Dunno, but we normally get the bulls the majority of the season not the hens.... every group will be full of bulls, and just the occasional hen in the mix. Not this year. I think we've killed one bull, but over a dozen hens on accident (mixed in with other ducks, or shooting for the 'sprig' only to find out its still a hen). So they are off a little on what they normally do for sure. I sure hope this doesnt tank the 2 pins a day, which was a long long time coming. travis

We had a bunch using our fields and they would be in groups of 50 but none wanted to work. We usually kill a good many, but they did nothing but mess with the mallards while they were working.

We started killing them regularily again in NE Arkansas just before our last and current freeze-up. Traditionally we get a big influx early in the season when they are going through and then a big push when they are staging in our area post Christmas to return to the freeze-line. We suspect that are mostly birds returning from south of us and questions to those that say they know confirm this as do some band reports on recently banded birds south of us. As the end of the season nears we see more and more Pintails and don't believe they are coming from the north. Thsi year we have more Mallards than ever and we have to be near the leading edge of the freeze line.
