Hearing protection

Guys,

I need some direction on what kind of hearing protection to purchase. I would like something that you can hear with, but kills the noise of gunshot. I am not really looking to go the cheap route and would prefer something that fits in the ear and not a pair of muffs. Let me know what works for you.

I hear the molded kind are pretty good. I've been looking for some myself. Anyone who does sporting clays may have some input or may know of some companies. Couple shoots I went to there was a booth with a guy selling them, but didn't get the info.

You can go all the way up to the electronic custom molded jobs that run about $1,000 apiece. I had a pair custom made at the audiologist here in Tupelo that don't have the electronics in them but have a baffle system that allows me to hear conversation and then shuts out the gun noise. Work well and were about $150.00.

I have had ESP in-the-ear electronic plugs (Katrina ate them) and have EAR in-the-ear electronic plugs. Originally they were for shooting, but they got converted to hunting. I think they were $650 or so on the second pair. They are perfect for dove, quail, pheasant, deer hunting, and eavesdropping on the blind next door. They take some getting used to for any hunting where you have to blow a call, as a duck call will either be "clipped" or "amplified" depending on the model and where you have the dial set, and if some dude is banging a high ball in your ear hole. I think Randy Dennis has some similar plugs that he duck hunts with he really likes, and does not have the "duck call" issue that I have with mine. You could probably PM Anatadae and ax him. Other than that issue, they really are great.

Thanks guys.....i'll run with some of this. I have pretty good hearing and I love to turkey hunt, so I don't want to ruin that in a duck hunting environment. Jt

We use these Howard Leight muffs. They work great, can amplify your hearing a good bit, and then muffle loud sounds. I basically turn the muffs up to where I hear the same with or without them. After you have them on 4 hours or so, you'll want to pop them off for a break for a few, but they are great for the money!

I have been using these (ZEM) recently http://www.nrastore.com/nra/Product.aspx?productid=SA%2022630. They may look like a gimic, but the things work a lot better than foam or shooter's plugs.
