Chokes
Chokes
I have always shot an 870 with a modified choke but was wondering what people thought about improved. do you have a lot more cripples? most of my shots are 10 to 25 yards at most 30 so i was just wondering if i shot one at 25 would it be just barely crippled or would it fold?

Re: Chokes
I shoot the kicks and can tell a difference over stock chokes. I guide and will be the last one to shoot so I shoot a full for the extended range.

Re: Chokes
I have shot a modified since steel took the full choke/lead away. Last season I let my son use my Dad's gun and had him shooting 2 3/4 shells through a IMCYL. He is 12 and I will tell you he shot ducks like a grown man, limited 5 out of the last 6 hunts we went on. This was mainly in the timber and shots were less than 30 yds. It made me re-think my own gun/choke choice.
Are we gonna get wet?

Re: Chokes
Assuming that you are using the standard lead designation.....IC & Mod (which translates to Mod & Full in steel shot).......my experience has been (when I'm shooting well, that is) that IC choke is adequate for steel shot out to 25-30 yds.

Re: Chokes
Yeah, I use IC. The shots that I take are about the same range and I have never had any problems.
Re: Chokes
Switched from M to LM this season and I haven't had any cripples yet, but I'm shooting #4 @ under 30 yards. Trying out improved as of this past weekend, but 1 frickin duck @ 10 yards ain't enough to make a pronouncement.

Re: Chokes
If im shootin 10-25 yards, 30 max, and little wind, Im shooting a skeet choke. And thats only because I don't have a cyl choke. Wind is as important as distance on choke with steel (imho).... close in the trees, you got little to no effect on your shot string, esp at those distances. I shoot an improved in the rice on stiller days, and a patternmaster on windy days.... but at close quaters, i want all the spread I can get. travis

So, you don't get to shoot much right?

Re: Chokes
I went form #2 steel in a mod choke to #4 with an IC- it was a marked improvement. I have not played with skeet yet, but it is on my list of things to do.

Re: Chokes
i switched to a kicks mod last year late season. I felt like there was an improvement in the number of dead vs number crippled. If i could just find one that made me shoot more accurately i'd be set.
