Try 6 mallards(3hens and 3 drakes) and 6 wood ducks(same split up) to start with. You may see wood ducks and gadwall with a mallard or two thrown in I would guess. I know some peeps in a deer camp that boarders the big black in Claiborne Co. and when the river gets up, that is what they see and shoot!

for exmaple you could kill a 4 greenheads (two banded), a mallard/black cross, and a mallard/gaddy cross and smash a hot blonde on the way back to the ramp and call it a hell of a day
and THAT is a duck hunt.

Start out with a single reed call, whether it be polycarb or wood. I will never advise anyone to start out on a double reed call. It causes too many bad habits to fix later.

I call Bullchitt. A duck call ain't no different than anything else. It's up to the individual on how well he wants to call, regardless of the call. Yeah the singles are more versatile, blah blah blah, they're prettier, sexier, take up for small penis syndrome blah blah blah.

Specifically what habits do you speak of? Is the quarter turn, anti countering clockwise tongue roll done differently on the single?

Go getta call and blow the chitt out of it. Record yourself till you sound how you feel a caller should. Try your luck this year, gimme a holler next year and you can hunt with us. I'll show you what a chitty duck hunt is...

In the meantime don't ax too many questions round here, lotta pros hangin out that'll topwater the chitt outta ya.

I started out with an RNT original in cocabola. Given to me by my father. Sounded like absolute chit for about the 1st year, but you get better and better as time goes on. Recording yourself is a good thing to do so you can hear exactly what you sound like. Just remember to keep blowing it even after the season goes out. Otherwise you will be right back in the same place come next season. Welcome to the sport, and good luck to you.

take someone with you the first couple of times you go out... and dont be afraid to ask them for help.
Sometimes you just have to close your eyes, count to ten, take a deep breath and remind yourself that you wouldn't look good in prison stripes... and just smile at that dumbass and walk away.
