You mean for calling "wood ducks?" I don't think any of them work very well, if at all, personally. The Haydells or Primos sound pretty good.

I personally have swung many a woodie (that was looking) with a Wiley flextone woodie call.
That said, you are not going to call many woodies in. But I look at it like this, you don't kill 100% of em that pass you by, so I at least try.
Looking for 2 duck calls from Dominic Serio of Greenwood (ones for Novacaine)

I second the fact that you can't call them, they travel in packs. You can't beat a real decoy. Good luck though!!!

Wiley Flextone is what I use over here in Bama. Partner it up with a couple decoys and you should be good.

woodrows are like a dove, once they have their mind made up that they are going to X spot, that is where they are going. But i have turned them enough to get a pass shot at them with a call. Buck Gardner has a good one and Haydels has 2 that are good.

You cant really work a wood duck but I have turned them alot of times. I will blow mine early before the big duck flights. In the holes I hunt woodies are almost always in with the big ducks (when there are any big ducks). In my opinion it is a pretty good confidence call for the big ducks, if they hear a woody it just seems natural.

I have a haydels woody call, It may not work every time but I do beleive it works sometimes.

I have a Quaker Boy that I really like. I agree about not being able to work them while they are flying. I have however called in several while they were swimming in the timber.

Old timers trick:

Just grab whatever mallard call is on your lanyard, if it is a barrell call with and insert and reed, such as a rich-n-tone or echo, etc. pull the insert from the barrell. Place the tip of the insert in yo mouth, reed side up. Lightly blow with teeth on the reed low note then high note. Depending where you place pressure on the insert will change the pitch. Shoot wood ducks. Put insert back in call, drink cup of coffe, begin to call and work mallards.

Practice a little beforehand on where to place pressure, soon you will be able to do it quickly and in the dark and make it sound as good or better than a real woodie. Use the money saved from buying wood duck call to buy more shells to shoot more ducks. Done.

Gumbo,
Nate trick, I just went out side and tried it. I will have to work on it but it did work.

Gumbo is a man of many talents. Did you figure that out on your own or did some old timer let you have that secret?
