The perfect dove field.

If you could plant anything that would grow in MS, what would you plant? I planted solid sunflowers last year, mowed some and left some for 2nd and 3rd seasons. But the hurricanes blew down the remaining ones. I was thinking about staggering my planting dates, but.....what do y'all plant on your fields? Seems like a variety of foods would be better.

Wingman, I hunted on your sunflower field this past year and would not change a thing. Great Hunt!!! Hope to repeat in 2003. Not sure it could have been any better. Lots of birds. Limits for entire hunting party within two hours (would have been sooner except for some poor shooting). Birds easy to retrieve. Safe conditions.

The two best fields I've hunted over were millet and sunflowers. I've heard that doves really like popcorn too, but have never had any experience with the stuff. I think you're onto the right approach with a rotation-type planting, though.

If I could plant anything I wanted, I'd go with sunflowers.

I'm going to try milo this year. Last year planted wheat in November and left it in June and didn't harvest. Johnson grass got about 7 ft tall in July & August. Mowed the last of August Lots of wheat naturally Hell of a field. Left the field during the winter for quail hunts and didn't plant wheat so now I have to try something new. Had another field with sunflowers about a mile away, which historically for the past 20 years has been awesome, didn't have 300 birds killed off it. Guess doves like a change up also.

I would think if you hunt a marijuana field the birds would be flying to high

Stagger plant sunflowers and corn about 10 rows of each. Harvest all but about two rows of corn on each stagger. then mow all but about four rows of sunflowers and every other stagger of the corn. Popcorn will work to but it doesn't give you much cover. It also will not tolerate wet conditions like we had this past year.

just think if those birds digest the pot then all ya got to do is put out some cookies and munchies and wait...then just walk around and scoop them up...Now I know baiting a field is illegal but can you see slyvester and gale faces when you dispute that cookies can be more than 15 per square foot and not considered bait.... Then of course you got bill streans eating up all your unbait...but thats another story

when I was up at the "other school" in Oxford, one of the unforgivable mistakes i've made, i worked at the marijuana field right there off hwy 6. i'll bet over a thousand doves came in every day and would not leave. they would lite within three feet and wouldn't fly if you chased 'em. they were fat as pigeons too. when they did fly they had that wobbly look to 'em. pretty funny.

If I was given the choice of a well-prepared sunflower field or anything illegal, whether it's corn chops, wheat or pot, I would take the sunflowers every time. Wingman, don't mess with last year's recipe. Do the same thing in the same place!
