southern flight seminar and party... june 21st

Postby goosebruce » Wed May 28, 2008 8:35 pm

I'm pleased to announce another fantastic southern flight event. In honor of skinny james coming home safe from iraq, we've got a party/social planned for saturday night, june 21st. Kids & spouses encouraged, a pig in ground by our famous gene ragon, and the awesome licks of our friends Rockers Oysterfella (the band that played at the Dwyers fall before last). And we're gonna start the weekend off, with an expanded judges/handler field seminar. Steve Vires of Online Labs has graciously allowed us to use his place once again to have an event. And its gonna be a big one.

The seminar... this is what we've been told people want/need. After looking at the offical classroom judges/handlers seminar, there seems to be something seriously lacking. And that would be dogs, handlers, judges, and a test. While hrc's seminar does a fantastic job of explaining the rules, guidelines, and requirements of a test, being a classroom only seminar means you never 1) set up a test, 2) run dogs on a test, 3) judge a dog running a test, 4) learn anything about handling a dog on a test. This is not just for judges, anyone planning on handling dogs or running tests, or serving on a hunt committee can benefit from a day with knowledgable presenters like this.

The plan... 2 groups, each with 2 judge presenters, and a handler presenter. The judges will set up a test, involving particpants in every step. From the line, sun, wind, what they are looking for, what they expect, the areas of the falls, to the logistics of getting people into the test, rebirding, and blind planters. One group starts on water, one on land. We'll do seasoned and finished set ups. And once the judges have built a test, answered the questions, talked about what if's, we're gonna have a handler presenter come to the line and tear apart the test, how he'd run it, where to expect problems, and things to look for, work on. All setups will have some dogs ran on them, to see if the objectives of the test design where met, as well as to show how the judges viewed the performance. Our judge presenters will fill out judges sheets and explain the good, the bad, and the ugly of the perfomances as they happen. The focus will be on running dogs for discussion and presentation sake, not to simply be running dogs. This is a seminar and not a training day.

The presenters... Our judge presenters include Johnny Barlow, Glen Dye, Ronnie Harwell, and Steve Vires. Thats 40 years combined hrc experience, countless runs, passes, and titled dogs at all levels, and appox 250 judging assignments between the four. Our handler presenters will be Tony Stafford and Charles Dwyer. Tony and Charles have ran and titled dogs at all levels of hrc. All 6 of our presenters have served at various capacities as officers, hunt committee members, hunt secetarys or hunt chairs, so they all understand a hunt test from front to back, and have the ability to relay that to a group. Afternoon discussion will include q&a time, Travis Bruce will talk about philisophy, and we'll discuss some of the common misconceptions about the rules of hrc.

Advanced resignation will be required for the seminar. With so much to cover, and trying to go so in depth, the group must be managable in size. The seminar is not a requirement for the saturday night social, and , friends, kids or spouses that might be intrested in the social are very much encouraged to come down for it only. We'll start at 8 am saturday and the social offically starts at 430 pm. The band will play their first set appox 630, we'll eat as the sun goes down then rock a little more. Let the kids bring their swim trunks, they can swim in the pond & we're gonna have some kid stuff for them to do early evening. Steve has agreed to mow an area for campers for those that want to stay on the grounds, and Holiday Lodge has cabin for rent just a few minutes away, so there is no reason for anyone to have to party and drive. Sunday morning we'll simply do whatever anyone left wants to do. There is NO cost to southern flight members for this event, they'll be a donation bucket at the grill saturday night for the food however. Visitors intrested in this event can contact me, and if there is room will be allowed at a nomimal fee (which'll include a membership btw). For pre-registration email at goosebrce1@aol.com or call 901-412-2392 (email is preferred, if you call leave msg). Plan on bringing your lunch, drinks, chairs, easy ups, tick dope and sunscreen. We'll be nonstop in the field until we move to shade trees and afternoon discussion. No alcohol until the dogs are put up please.

Also Clark Kennigton is doing a demo at Thunder On the Water in the Grenada area June 14th & 15th, which is a national drag boat event, and a big tourism event in that area. Hes hoping to get some members to come out, help him spread the word about Southern Flight and HRC, and just have big time. Call him at 662-809-5998 if you can help him. travis
