Poppers

How many of clubs in region 5 are going to use the primer load poppers instead of factory loaded poppers?

I can tell you one that isn't! Southern Flight HRC. Please don't fall for the trick of taking hunting out of our hunt tests. I'll agree with Bill Autrey's statements on it, next thing you know, you got a toy gun and white coats. Exactly the reason I stated on HRCs fourm I didn't think nonhunters added a single thing to our program (as a whole, obviously not individuals), and shouldnt be catered to one bit. Its a hunt test, and I don't shoot caps at rubber duckies when I hunt, I don't want to when I test either. Take the shells, soon they'll take our guns, and next they'll take our ducks. Watch and see.
I have written letters to a couple of different ammo makers, explaining our need for a reasonable noise level popper (federal and remington, who neither currently make poppers). I gave them the numbers, how big a market it really is (HRC ran 14000 dogs last year, AKC more, and NHARA a few less), not to mention how many loads shot in training. Both letters were well received, but as of yet, haven't heard anything more than polite thank you's from them. travis

Poppers

Late on a Sunday afternoon in July, our club got together to shoot some clay pigeons. I was really knocking em down until I borrowed some bullets from Travis. After that, I couldn't hit the broadside of a barn. It just now struck me that my ole bud may have slipped some of them poppers to me. I knew that there was some funny looking dust coming out of the end of the barrel as I shot.

Yo Travis, I don't know squat about the needs of a hunt test but Winchester does make 3 kinds of poppers. You probably already know, but here's the details:
10 gauge 8 drams about $20.00 a box of 25
12 gauge 6 drams about $16.00 " " " "
12 gauge "Smokeless Powder Blank" about $9.00 a box of 25
Good luck, have fun.

6 drams? Either they are black powder, or twice the powder of a normal shell! SHeeettt. The 9 buck a box ones are the ones we are forced to use, and they are easily twice as loud as a cheapie dove load, and as loud or louder as a magnum duck load. And the field trialers want them louder (they shoot 300 yards from the dog and handler, not over their head like we do). We normally train with promo dove loads (3 bucks a box and don't kill everyone with dust and noise, of course we try to wear ear protection when we train shooting), and it chaps are ass we gotta pay 3 times as much for a shell with no shot, but twice as loud. travis

You are right about the 6 drams of black power. Our club got a hold of some a few years ago and when the first handler shot it jarded the ground and you could not see you hand in front of your face and stink o My God.

Alright I'm back. After doing some research this is the was it is and the way it will be until I am told different. Any HRC club that wants to use primer loaded shells can do so. If they are having a back to back hunt then the primers loads must be used both day and in every stake that is run. On the other hand should a club choose to use poppers, such as kent or winchester, then they must use them both days in a back to back and in every stake. There WILL NOT be any of this using primer loads in started and popper loads in season and finished. From now on region 5 will think I am General Patton when I come to a Hunt Test. I will have a note book at least 3 inches thick to take notes and a pocket full of pen and pencils. Every thing and I do mean everything will be by the book!!!!!!!! Poppers

Now you're talking!! Crack the whip!! No more Mr. Nice Guy!!
Have you looked at the cost of just one of those twelve gauge inserts. It is twice as expensive as a box of Winchester poppers. The only way out would be to reload primer only shells. Then there would be a liability issue.

I have not look at a twelve gauge insert or the cost. I saw a dohickey at M/SBama hunt that was made of medel with an oring on it that fit in a single barrell that you put a primer in but you had to have a screw driver to remove it. The primer just fell out when you opened up the gun. I would be infavor of using primers in started but after thinking about it it would be too much trouble to have the handler to chose which they wanted to shoot. Some of the dough doughs I see with a gun would have trouble with the choice.

Waboduck--you had better go ahead and get your order in for the poppers you will need. It takes four to six weeks to get them in. I heard yall have a big hunt planned.

Waboduck If I can be of any help please let me know. I'd like to know who your judges are it you already have them nailed down. Chance is right about the poppers. If you don't already have them you had better be ordering them other wise you will have to try and get some from other clubs that maybe have a large supply. This is where it would be nice to have a central wharehouse in region 5 to store poppers or to have a supplier. If someone has any ideas lets here them.

Poppers

By my figgers, store bought poppers run 32 cents a peice. That means for a finished test, back to back, a handler will shoot less than 6 bucks worth of poppers. But will spend $110 on fees, plus hotel's, gas, raffles, and other things... Even if primers cut that cost to a 1/4, its nothing compared to the overall cost. Within reason, cost should never be a reason to compromise a test. travis
