Postby richard b evers » Tue Dec 19, 2006 11:26 am

   I killed my first black duck Firday and I'm going to get it mounted. Where would be the best place to get it done, and what duck mounting would be the best for a black duck????

The main thing that you need to see in a black duck is the dark purple speculum. I have one that shows the bird banking with wings outstreched. I have a friend who has one standing on driftwood. Cupped or flying often doesn't show what you need to see.

I also have one banking left with wings outstretched, looks awsome under good light. I agree that the wings are the key attractant. McGuires Tax. in Clinton has mounted 7 ducks for me and I am pleased with everyone, the black in particular.

I like the blacks standing on drift wood with the head tucked under a wing preening. I'll try to find a pick for ya.

Or a dead mount

I'm kicking myself still 2 years later for not mounting a black duck. I killed 2 drakes in one hunt and decided not too.

There are only a few posts on this subject right now but I would guess that you will get more recommendations for Tommy Lovelace than any other Taxidermist. He does birds exclusivley. Has 27 years expierience. Did most if not all birds in mean Mallard. He is located in brandon, MS on hwy 471. Hm 601-853-9697 Cell 601-941-5952 Ofc 601-824-0476. You really don't even have to know what you want. Let him make the suggestion or just tell him to mount it; like I do.

I was young and dumb and didn't realize how rare they are. I was 16 at the time and was just hunting with a couple of friends. 4 black ducks cupped in  and I got a double while my friends missed the other two. Like I said, "I'm still kicking myself". They tasted great tho! :D
