Gardens 2013
Anybody doing any garden work yet? I have some broccoli planted, did some tilling this weekend and will probably plant a few tomatoes in a few weeks, trying to get a head start.
I am interested in purchasing duck calls that were made by Mike McLemore. I am a family member and they have a sentimental value.

Grounds ready to be planted.
Corn and cucumber seeds going in the ground the 3/16 (I plant by the moon). I have close to 80 tomato plants growing in cups that I started from seeds on 2/13. Picture is of my old light system. Now I have (2) 24" two bulb strip lights hanging over the plants.
Later on I'll plant pole beans, carrots, watermelon, and okra.

That setup looks a little fishy , did you order your seeds out of " High Times " magazine ?MudHog wrote:Grounds ready to be planted.

Got 14 rows of corn in the ground Friday afternoon and 5 or 6 rows ready for potatoes and broccoli and such, whenever the co-op will get some stuff in....

Where'd who go?

I'm feeling a little inadequate after seeing that pic

I'm not a pro probably not even a novice but, I'm still trigger shy to plant now. My grandfathers ground thermometer read 51 degrees about a week ago and I had a Heavy frost on the car this morning.

I'd love to get some maters started early but will keep watching the 15 day forecast to keep from planting twice

Don't have a garden spot but I love mater sandwiches with slices of banana peppers on them with the bacon. Any advise on using wooden boxes or crates as planters for just a few plants to have on the deck????

You can use either 2x6 or 2x8 to make raised beds. Another good thing to use is mineral tubs from cattlemen. Plastic and good size that could hold a couple mater plants or 4 pepper or bean plants per bucket.
The only thing with raised beds, is you will need to water more frequently as gravity pulls the water down through the bed, but you can make a greate garden using a raised bed. Use the soil for 3-4 years and then change the soil out and you will have more veggies than you can eat with little use of fertilizers.

Granny has a book titled "Gardening by the Foot", search that fella up...I built the wife 4 4x4 boxes and we plant ALOTTA crap in em. Basicly plants are in 1 foot sections of the box to utilise space...very interesting

Use good dirt...we buy bulk garden soil at our local nursery that seems to work good, but, add a bag of miracle grow on occasion

Great info in that book. Have it on my shelf here in my office. Have plenty of room for gardening at home, but once used boxes similar to what you are using to do my sister a gardening area in town. She got a lot of food out of those small areas.Dux Be Us wrote:RNAIL wrote:Don't have a garden spot but I love mater sandwiches with slices of banana peppers on them with the bacon.
