Tide auditioning for the WWF

Postby Po Monkey Lounger » Mon Oct 15, 2012 5:07 pm

In case you have been busy like me since Sat, and not had time to come out of your hole until now, here is the replay of the Tide player body slamming the Missouri RB in true WWF style:

http://www.al.com/alabamafootball/index ... as_ap.html

Hard to watch, isn't it? Yikes. The question is this: will Slive suspend this Alabama player? Compare this flagrant, and very dangerous tackle to the previous two tackles that resulted in SEC suspensions of Trae Elston of Ole Miss and the player from SC. No comparison. This one is much worse. But, will there be a suspension?

Nick Saban, who did not immediately remove the player from the game, later decided that the Tide player should write a written apology to the MO player and MO head coach, and also made him write out 100 times on the blackboard that he will never Suplex another opponent again. Reports are surfacing that the Tide defender started this project Sat. evening and is still at it. Tough punishment there.

Now I think it was Nick Saban who recently questioned whether the no huddle/fast break offense is what we want to see in college football. I now have to ask Nick, is the WWF style of defense what we really want to see in college football? Well....hell yeah to both.

Just what I thought would happen.

On Tuesday, the SEC office issued the following statement on the matter:

"The NCAA Football playing rules call for mandatory conference review following specific fouls. The SEC has been diligent in reviewing plays that by rule involve the initiation of contact and targeting defenseless opponents to the head and neck area. The conference maintains constant communication with head coaches on matters of penalty violations during the season.? In the first instance discipline for violations involving non-NCAA-required automatic conference review are to be handled by the institution subject to the approval of the league office."

So, they suspend an Ole Miss player who delivered a hard, legal hit that was not penalized by the officials on the field, and was clearly not direct head to head contact. But, they don't suspend an Alabama player who body slams a player to the ground in a manner that could have easily broken the opposing player's neck. For the sake of consistency and fairness, they couldn't even bring themselves to suspend a THIRD STRING Tide player, reagardless of the circumstance.

It is pretty clear that the SEC office is making this caca up as they go along. Its an absolute farce and embarassment to the league. Perhaps Slive has now decided to get out of the suspension business and let the officials handle things --- I have previously opined that he would regret those early season suspensions. Only time will tell. In the meantime, it looks like a typical SEC double standard --- one set of rules for teams like Ole Miss, SC, etc., and yet another for Alabama.

We are Alabama...you are Ole Miss. It's pretty simple.

So tell me what rule did the guy break with that tackle. Leading with his helmet? No. Hitting a defenseless player? No. The point is to tackle the guy, I seriously doubt he was trying to hurt the guy. He is a guy way down the depth chart trying to prove himself. I have seen that exact same tackle happen at all levels of the game and have never seen it flagged. If you really think that the guy did not get suspended just because he plays for a certain school then you are delusional and jealous.

So I finally got to finish watching the game on DVR. After seeing the play on the TV instead of my phone I will have to say it was worse than I originally thought. I still don't think he really meant to do that or meant to try and hurt the guy. I think he was just trying to pull him backwards and that is how it came out.

You still gotta suffer the consequence even if he didn't mean to, but in this case there is no consequence. The inconsistency in the league office is laughable.

Saban is handling this internally. So what if the SEC suspended him for one game...he may not play Saturday anyway. Saban may choose not to play him as sort of a penalty...but, really, what should the punishment be? I agree it was uncalled for, especially in this day of "No Contact" football - courtesy of the NFL.
