Postby tombstone » Sun Oct 14, 2012 11:39 am

Geeze, sometimes the internet has too much info.

Somebody give me a simple way to preserve a rattlesnake skin on a board. Salt??? Alum?

Tack it down to a board stretched out. Pour salt on the meat side keep it somewhere dry like in tour shop or something. Every other day or so rub the salt around just to keep it loose on the skin.

I have done a bunch of them and always used borax. It is on the laundry detergent isle at wal mart. After it dries use glycerol on the outside to soften it back up some.

What are you going to do with it? If it is going on a bow, don't salt it. Glue will not adhere very well to it. Air dry and scrape the flesh off of it. I have skinned many recurves and all I do is air dry and have never had a problem. <>, del

The best method I've seen is submersion in a 50/50 mix of alcohol and glycerin for a few days to a week. Cures them in a fexible manner.

Glycerol is just a brand name. Glycerin is what you want. Yes on the scale side.

I did this 2 years ago on a big rattler. It turned out great
