Rejecting the pumps in my opinion is a bad thing. This has been an ongoing battle and what the EPA and those against the pumps fail to realize is that the water is eventually going downstream anyway. Pumping it over the levee instead of allowing it to build up and flood property and residences is detrimental, not to add that bears, deer, rabbits, turkeys, and all of the other animals do not benefit from having 6+ feet of floodwater on the ground. In the Spring when the pumps would most often be utilized, the waterfowl have all flown north to the breeding grounds in the Dakotas and Canada. If not having the pumps in the South MS Delta is considered a good thing, then turn off the pumps in New Orleans and see how quickly those it directly affects change their minds about having the pumps. Just my 2 cents.

I am in favor of the pumps because it is the final step in a multi year plan to prevent flooding in the delta. In some sense all the levees that have been put in over the years are for naught without the pumps. The EPA claims the pumps will destroy wetlands for waterfowl. My understanding is that the pumps wouldnt be turned on except during extreme flood stages, so how does that affect the normal sloughs and seasonal flooding of timber? My guess is that the funds are hard to come by and the EPA wants to have control over something.
