Re: Isn't this illegal?
May be a set up. Ive seen some females decorating with deer antlers and wanting to "buy" some. I had to jump in and let them know that was illegal. I'd hate to see someone who doesnt have a clue about hunting get popped by a set up.
Re: Isn't this illegal?
Why is it illegal to sell antlers? I just don't see the rationale behind it.

The state markets hunting like crazy. Just look in a Louisiana Sportsman magazine. You will see MDWFP adds in every issue.Chuckle12 wrote:Market hunting.three11 wrote:Why is it illegal to sell antlers? I just don't see the rationale behind it.

You can buy them on EBay?!? I just don't see how someone picks up some sheds, then goes and sells them at a flea market for decoration is a criminal. Or if somebody shoots a deer, takes the antler, makes a knife handle out of it, and then sells it to his neighbor...that's illegal?
If it is, then there's just too many damn laws in this country for this ol boy I guess.
Re: Isn't this illegal?
i think this guy is seeking a barter.
could still be illegal......or not.....don't know.
pretty sure it's not legal here in da' sip, but seems like it's legal to sell hide or antler as a craft or "art" (i.e; knife handle, deer hide covered stool, etc)
on another note Joel, i think you've found your second calling..............bustin' folks out that sell knock offs & illegal stuff!

I'm no lawyer, but that says to me that it is legal to sell a mount.quackhead11 wrote:SEC. 49-7-51. Sale of game birds, animals or fish.

Re: Isn't this illegal?
That's how I read it as well. I am not sure if mswfp regulations say anything different.

Market hunting means an individual taking game for the sole purpose of selling parts of the animal or the whole animal for profit. Not marketing hunting, like promoting it.

Re: Isn't this illegal?
Years ago I was searching for antler for a knife to be made. A local taxidermist sent me to a local sporting goods store telling me, "he probably has some he'd sell you." I walked in the sporting goods store and asked the manager/owner if I could buy and antler to have a knife made for me. He went nuclear on me saying he didn't break laws and just kept going on and on. I was about 17 at the time and I guess the look of shock and dismay made him back up a minute and ask why I came and asked him. I apologized and said I had no idea it was illegal. I was just looking for an antler to have a knife made and didn't have one of my own. I told him who had sent me there and he said that figured. He walked me through the whole law and told me how he had problems with the other guy and that I was just used by him to come ask that question. Pretty sorry for that guy to do that to me and I never went back to his place but did shop at the sporting good store often and became pretty good friends with him over the years. I was just getting started in deer hunting and so forth and he taught me a lot. I ended up shooting a buck that year that worked nicely for have the knife made. It was a graduation present from a friend whose Dad made it for me. I still have it.

The way I read it, it looks as though it's only okay to sell antlers after they have been crafted into something (knife, chandelier, etc . . .). That would leave a lot of loopholes, too.
