That is an interesting topic in and of itself. Most of the new 1/2 tons will tow a lot of weight. The ability to pull is generally not the problem anymore so much as it is the ability to stop it. There is a boating forum called the Hull Truth and people tend to argue about this topic all of the time.

"I have a 32' Yellowfin that weighs 11,000 lbs dry...is it safe for me to tow it from Hattiesburg to Destin behind my F-150?" Well, no, but safe is relative. In a world that does not have poor drivers and require quick stops and lane changes, you would probably be fine. That world doesn't exist.

IMO, if you are towing at the top of the rated capability of your 1/2 ton it is probably worth it to get the 3/4 ton just to make sure you are safe. It only takes one time to screw it up for you, your family or someone else.

I know a guy that hauls a 27' Cape Horn behind a 2010 Toyota Tundra 4wd Crew. The truck has no problem pulling the boat, but I am told, gets HORRIBLE gas mileage while doing so and he has to really, really anticipate stops, etc. Point being, there is a lot less room for error.

If you own a 32' Yellowfin, you should be able to afford the proper truck to pull it.....

True, but this type of question is all over that board. Moreover, in the panhandle of Florida, it is probably not altogether uncommon for someone to spend more money on their boat than their house. You gotta look like a roller on Crab Island you know. :D
