Flu shot

Postby Double Reed » Tue Jan 01, 2013 10:25 pm

Do you get one or pass on it? I'm seeing tons of folks getting them and still get the flu. Mostly small kids. Seems like there getting a bad case of it also. I'm really leaning toward not getting one. What's your thoughts?

I started taking one after my sister in law was on chemo a few years back and have not had the flu since. But, I have heard this year that a lot of people are getting flu who did take the shot back early on.

the flu shot apparently didn't work this year. think they missed the strand that's prevalent... High cases of it going around this year.

I always take one but my job requires it. My wife on the other hand never takes one. She got the flu last week while the rest of us who had the flu shot were fine. Wife says she will take the shot for sure next year.

The thing with flu shots is that they guess on what strand is going to be prevelant that year and sometimes they guess wrong. So the people you see with the flu that had flu shots probably got a different strand of the flu.

That's what a few nurse friends have told me. They guessed wrong and cases are up this year.

I get the shot every year and have never had the flu.....same with the rest of the family. Now i just need to find some wood to knock on....

I've never had one and I don't think I have had the flu since I was kid. I may get it tomorrow, but I've seen too many get it anyway. I don't think I could take it if I wanted to, though. I recently discovered that I am allergic to eggs. I read that the flu vaccine is grown on chicken embryos and can cause serious reactions if you have egg allergies. Don't know how accurate that is, but I don't think it would be allowed on the internet if it weren't entirely true.

Never taken the flu shot and never will. I'm 36 years old and can count on one hand the number of times I've had the real flu.
I've been sick plenty with sinus or colds but running fever and feeling achy doens't mean you have the flu. If you go to the dr.
and they check you and you have it then it's the flu. If you stay in bed and say "I think I have the flu", then who really knows if
you have the flu or just a bad cold and or the stomach virus.

Some people believe in them, but I don't trust injecting myself with something when it's not necessary. More risk than reward for me.

Everybody in my family had the vaccine except for me. I had one son get the flu anyway but the others did not. I didn't have the vaccine and still didn't get the flu.

Bottom line - I think it's a crap shoot either way.

just wash your hands on a regular basis or use the anit bacterial stuff and try not to rub your nose or eyes during the day. As long as your not sitting by someone all day that has it then you should be ok. Most folks get the flu from places like door knobs, phones, remotes, etc...

The last time I got the flu was when I closed on my house, and they wouldn't postpone the closing 1 day because of it. It was sheer h3ll, I tell you. Since then I have always gotten a flu shot. Now, my job requires it.

My advice? Get the shot. It is much better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.

Have only taken two flu shots in my life, and they were both mandantory, at the time....swine flu back in the '70s, and some other kinda one back in the '80s....chicken flu, or maybe the goat flu, I'm not sure....only those two times did I catch the flu....none since then....so, NO, I don't get flu shots!!!
