First attemp at a skull mount
First attemp at a skull mount
The skull was found by one of our members so I figured I'd try my hand at skull mounting.

Looks awesome! Tell us the process you used. I have tried 2 but they didn't turn out that good and took way longer than I thought. Making me think 75$ is cheap to have it done.

The deer was found dead so nature pretty much took care of the defleshing process. But the antlers were somewhat bleached from sun overexposure.cagoodwn wrote:contender wrote:Looks awesome! I basically cleaned it with soap & brush before applying 40% peroxide gel purchased from beauty supply store. I then secured all loose bone & teeth with Zap A Gap.
For whatever reason, the peroxide did not give me the clean white skull I wanted. Not sure why, but wondering if it needed another application or two. So I spray painted it using a bone white color. Wanted it in flat, but had to settle for satin finish. Little to shiny for my liking, but not bad.
As mentioned, the antlers were bleached white from sunlight exposure so I used the lightest color stain available to restore the natural color.
As far as the plaque/stand, I didn’t want a wall mount, but wanted to display on a shelf. The base is from an old cedar log & the upright is from an old cedar fence post (complete with original barbed wire). I’m not 100% pleased with the outcome of the base after applying a satin clear coat. I guess the clear coat soaked into the grain too much & made it darker than expected.
So anyway, it was my first attempt & I definitely learned some things that I can use on the next one.
