I think its a good hire. They obviously want to compete with the big boys and they aren't going to a fast-pace offense.

Funny. The only team that beat Bama ran a fast pace offense. UGA ran a fast pace, no huddle offense for most of the SECCG and almost won.

You appeared to suggest that to compete with the "big boys", an offense other than one fast paced would be required. I had assumed that you included Bama as one of the "big boys ".
I disagree. Arkansas will not be able to beat the Tide at its own game. And a low scoring conventional offense without a great defense will not be able to hang with the likes of TAM, UGA, or LSU.
I like the hire AR made. But not because I think it was a good hire for AR.

I really don't consider UGAs offense fast paced and as far as A&M goes any offense with Johnny Football would cause problems. You take away the. Lock field goal for a TD(which has nothin to do with offense pace) and Bama wins by 14. Yes the fast paced offenses are for trying to make up for inferior talent but how often do you see them win championships. Auburn won with a spread but not really a fast paced offense and had Cam. Florida won with a running spread but not a fast paced offense and had Tebow. So if you are going to run the spread and compete with the big boys then you better have a special QB. That being said I think LSU is the only team that can line up and play head on with Bama.

IF you watched the same SEC title game that I did, then you would have seen UGA in a shotgun, NO HUDDLE offense for much of the game. Unless the offense takes time to shuttle in players from the sideline, the D has little time to shuttle any defensive personnel in and out. This keeps the same defenders on the field for several plays at a time, wearing them down.
UGA's offense this season was very versatile, and they ran an uptempo, no huddle offense during the season at times with great success. Prior to the SEC title game, I had stated that UGA would match up well against the Tide D due to this capability. UGA used this type of offense against Bama moreso than they had previously shown during the regular season. And just as I predicted, UGA was able to move the ball against Bama and hang in there, almost taking it at the end.
Is UGA's no huddle as fast as Oregon? No. Few, if any, offenses are that fast. But, UGA's version this season was considerably faster than its more conventional sets, and offerred a nice change of pace to keep defenses off balance.

Biggie, what program are we going to turn around?
I would wager that a staff put together by our board members could do better at USM than their previous head coach.
