Internet problems

Alright guys, i have dsl, i usually run somewhere between 600-750 kbps out here in my apartment, our house is networked and i have the longest line. Starting last night somewhere around 7 i started pushing a whopping 8 kbps, it's sped up a little bit, but only because i've unplugged every phone in the house. I'm getting about 80 right now. Inside the house is getting about 100 where it usually has over 750. Any of you internet guys know anything about this or how to fix it ?? i talked to bellsouth.net technicians for a hour and 45 minutes last night and they were unable to help me.

i usually run about 10 times the speed i'm running right now, about 7 oclock last night it just started running slow like this. Bellsouth was unable to help me, can anybody on here help ??

call cableone and you won't have that problem and it is cheaper

How long is your line from the hub?
300 feet is about the max length that you can get a cat5 cable to carry a decent signal. You have to put either a signal booster or a hub somewhere in the middle of the cable run to boost the signal.

not sure on the length, it's been working fine for about a year.... the guys that installed it do it for a living so i think they put something there if it required it, but not positive.

we've had cable and it was ''ok'' dsl has been much more reliable until now..... plus we have direct tv, so no point in paying for cable too

Have you done anything recently to your home that could have affected the wiring?

If your wiring has been there awhile it is possible that corrosion has built up on the connections. Heavy kinks in the line will cause feed back.
How fast is your network card talking? 10m, 100m ?
If you running 100m and the system is slow, it can easily be variance in the wiring causing the problem. My suggestion is to take the machine that is slow and move it as close to the DSL modem as possible and go on line. This will tell you if it is machine related or if you’re having wiring issues. If it turns out to be wiring issues it is best to re-punch new modular connectors on that line. You also want to make sure that any firewall you have is not the problem in that it could have been updated and defaulted back to a slower circuit speed.

Just a few suggestions I would check out.

your bellsouth dsl normally runs at 600-750 kbps?? Not that well versed on DSL but my Bellsouth dsl normally runs at 1.4 Mbps I have been told top is 1.5. Cable is about 3.0 . I am the last on the line which is about 140' long:?: Cable here is $70 mo DSL is 50. I'll take DSL

the whole system is running slow, not just my unit, i'm on the office puter at the house right now and it actually seems to be a lil slower than mine which is on the end of the line. This one is right next to the modem on about a 3 foot cord. We haven't done anything to it, moved here a year ago, and the network was installed then.

the 6-750 is an estimate, it may be higher than that, but i don know i've tested it on my computer and ended up with i think 690 something. Not only is my puter on the end of the line at the house, our house is abotu the farthest one away(of the ones that get dsl) from the bellsouth substation.

I get 28.8 tops, on a good day with sunshine and low humidity. Anything other than optimum weather, and I usually can't even get a dial tone much less internet service.

I called them and asked if DSL was available for the Vance area.

They just laughed.

The same kind of thing happened to a friend and Bell South changed his account from Extreme to light. You should verify your account status. Also, have you connected a computer directly to the modem to insure the problem is not there:?:

Well there ya have it. It is a network related problem that exist in either the DSL modem or the circuit feeding the modem. If a machine connected to the modem by three foot patch cord is slow it is not your wiring.
It is an issue that Bellsouth needs to resolve with your modem or circuit. After all that is what you are paying for.

Jake, you could also have spy ware on your cpu, also consider turning off your computer for a while. If you have an external modem, unplug it from the wall and turn off the power. If you are not happy with your first response from Bellsouth, call them back, you might be surprised at the next answer.

alright.... 3.5 hours of phone time and 4 bellsouth operators later.... the computer next to the modem is back where it normally is, fluctuating b/w 900 and 1000 kbps.... now for the interesting part... my computer out in our garage apartment is still just as slow, which leads me to believe there's a network problem also ?? everything decided to go haywire at the same time i guess.....
