Buying a recurve- where to go?
I have been wanting a recurve for years now. The last two times I went to Jackson to buy one I bought a guitar. No more.
I went to Bass Pro Sunday to browse and they didn't have as many as they used to. I don't know much about bows ( I have shot them several times before). The fellow working in the bow section walked up and asked me what I was doing. Just fondling. I told him I had little experience with bows, but that I wanted a recurve. After hearing that he kind of...sat there and just watched me. I picked up a longbow and he said, "that is a longbow" - like I am some sort of an outdoor idiot because I don't bow hunt. After about 5 minutes of weirdness I looked at him and said I am not planning on buying he can leave now (even though I was palnning on buying). That guy needs his boyfriend to pull that cantaloupe out of his booty, quit making that face and be helpful. I thought if I mentioned I had little experience with bows that would warrant his help. Instead he acted like I was a dumbazz and stared at me for 5 minutes until I realeased him from his duty. Everytime this guy's face flashes through my mind I get angry at everything (puppies, homeless children, senior citizens). Long story short- nobody say Bass Pro.
I don't plan on deer hunting a lot with it. I am going to primarily hog hunt with it when the duck season has gotten so phenomenal that I just can't stand it any longer. I also want it just to shoot. I am not interested in a compound bow. My budget is around 400$. Any recommendations on the best place to go check some out where I won't be treated like an idiot by some bowhunting elitist?

Next time find the young black guy that works in the Archery Dept or call and find out his name and see if he's working. He is super nice and very helpful. It wouldn't overly surprise me if the guy that helped you doesn't sell many recurves or know much about them at that. Recurves are old school..most people are only interested in the newest 400fps compounds and that makes up a large majority of their sales.
I would PM Swamprooter and pick his brain to get a little more information on what you may be looking for before your next shopping trip. Joey will know more about recurves than anyone in a store in Mississippi I would imagine.
Not making excuses for Bass Pro but they will have the best selection of non-custom bows (ex not copperheads/black widows/etc) which means they will have the cheaper bows. You want a custom, built to your specs, badass bow...call Copperhead or Black Widow! They are both awesome but a little more expensive than the box store bows will be.

Oh nooo I ain't shootin' ducks with them. With these phenomenal duck seasons we've had I may get tired of shooting ducks and get the urge to hunt less abundant game.
Jody that's the thing, from what little experience I have looking at them bass pro has the best selection of recurves.
