construction guys? porch roof addition

Postby bulldog ducker » Tue Apr 10, 2012 9:23 am

So my wife wants me to put a cover over a concrete pad that we have extending out the back door. It is about 14 ft wide by 10 ft deep. I have been toying with doing it myself but not sure if I have the knowledge. I can do it if I decide not to tie it into the house but I am not sure how that would look. Essentially if I did it I would let the new patio roof extend about 6 in over the house roof. In my mind it looks OK but cant decide if it would end up looking shotty or not.

If I cant DIY anybody have any idea what it might cost to have something like this done. I have priced material and it should be around 250$.

Post a pic of the existing patio with the roof so we can see how to tie in / what it would look like.

I am toying with the idea of a detached car port with a covered walk to it. I'll have to tie in to the existing porch roof to do it. Just not sure I want to tackle such a project right now as the house needs much more tangible projects (kitchen revamp is my #1).

I'm not so sure that would work. Would you not have problems with rain run off going between the roof of the house and the roof of the addition?

Sounds like you are considering a lean-to type roof that would attach to the roof of your house? So you would have two different roof pitches. I have considered the same thing, but I just don't think it would have a nice finished look to it. But if some one out there has pictures of one that has been done that looks nice, I would sure like to see them.

$250 seems low. What type of roofing are you planning to use? There are a lot of little things that will add up. A box of wood screws is $30 and you will multiple lengths/types, caulk, flashing, etc.

Existing roof has gutter. Would go over the gutter to rain water would go to the gutter no between.

Yes the pitch would be different. I wanted to build a pergola(sp) but the wife said that they are "stupid" and don't shade anything. If I cant do it myself I will likely not do it this summer as we are also planning on a kitchen revamp. It will be on a smaller scale ie new counter top/ back splash and repainting existing cabinets.

I don't think that would work well if the roofs were two separate structures. You will probably have rot issues at the gutter.
I would tie in to the roof like a lean-to or tie in farther up into the roof. If you go up into the roof, your going to get a more original look, but will increase your difficulty and materials.

Given the shape of your house, it looks complicated. And, personally, more than I would tackle.
Lean-to will not give you enough slope to run the rain off well. And If you do slope it enough, you going to have a low ceiling at the end of the patio.
Tieing into the roof up away from the eve is really tough as you have the corner to contend with.

In other words, I got nothing.

i have a guy build you something out of some square tubing, and run the roof panels right under your gutter and skin it with metal. it would be more like an awning.

I built an outdoor kitchen living area off of my back porch and tied into my roof with a metal roof, looks like tarnished cooper. You are welcome to come see.

If you're just looking for some sun relief as opposed to a rain covering, you could install a single post on the outside corner of the patio slab and tension-suspend a cut-to-fit piece of shadecloth anchored between the post and gutters/fascia. This would be super cheap and could be easily detached for cleaning.
