New York City do's and dont's

Me and a group of guys are going to New York. What should a group of college age guys do while There. And what should we not do. None of us have ever really been to a big city much less New York. Any words of wisdom?

I myself dont like Manhatten, but, jump on one of them tour bus thingys. Visit the Park(during daylight hours) and take a ride on a subway. If riding in a cab....dont watch the drivers driving habits. There is some descent food but not alot...anyone you try to talk to will think your gona rob them. Keep a coupla ones handy for any bumb encounters. Be prepared to spend the most you ever have for a hotel, and, dont expect alot of room...Y'all have fun

Go ahead and buy a day pass for the public transportation, you will spend a fortune if you try to use cabs. Get on food network and look up some good places to eat. Everyone we encountered was just as nice as they could be.

It is hard to give you advice on what to do. I am not sure what the purpose of the trip is etc... If you could score some Knick's tickets it would be a lot of fun catching a game at the Garden.

New York is a big place and there is a lot of stuff to do depending on what you like. I wouldn't recommend taking the time to go out to the statue of Liberty, the line to take the fairy out there is crazy. College kids might have more fun riding "the Beast". It is a speed boat that will run you out to the statue and back. If you have never been to New York before it is best to get a ticket for the circle line bus tour. They are double decker buses that will drive you all over the city with a tour guide. You can hop on and off any of the stops. Or even better is to just ride around and find places that you want to go back to on your own.

An absolute must is to get a Metrocard. Get a day pass for each day you are there at one of the kiosk in any station. The New York Subway is very efficient and can pretty much get you on any block of Manhattan. Ask the front desk at your hotel to give you an attractions map. It will be a map of New York with all the tourist destinations and subway routes. It is a must have with you at all times.

Some things that my family and I have enjoyed.
1) American Museum of Natural History.
2) Time Square
3) Helicopter flight over the city
4) The "Beast" to Statue of Liberty
5) Financial district and Wall street
6) You need to catch a broadway show if you have the cash. Tickets can be very expensive. The cheapest way of getting tickets is to go the TKS stand in Time Square, there you can get discounted tickets the day of the show.

Make sure you have plenty of money. New York is a very expensive city and a buck doesn't go very far there.

This is the reason this site is the best. Google ain't gonn give you this. I know it sounds corny, but this is good sound advice that I would have never thought of especially since cell phones don't work underground. Thanks for giving this guy and all of us a "heads up"

Use the double decker buses for transportation (3 day pass). You can get on/off as much as you like and this will take you all over the city with a tour guide.

Definitely go to the top of the Rockefeller Center and/or Empire State Bldg...it gives you a really good perspective of hoe large that city is. You 'll definitely enjoy a few days there but there's no way in hell that I would want to live there. And don't carry a firearm...they frown upon that.

One other thing...go to Ground Zero if you get the chance. You won't expect the emotions that come over you there even 10+ years after the fact. They ought to make everyone go there just so we never forget what those folks done to us and would do again if given the opportunity.

Stay the hell away from Harlem lol. Couple guys I was in the army with drove up to New York. They ended up in Harlem. A cop pulled up next to them and told them they was the wrong color and to get out of there. I would have to go see ground zero. Being college guys I imagine you can find a pretty good nightlife there. Be careful and have fun.

one other piece of advice while at groung zero NOTICE and respect the signs that say where you can and cannot take pics,video etc...we saw one guy get his booty tackled cause he was determined to take some unauthorized video.....believe me when i say that "THEY TAKE THAT CHIT SERIOUS" they haul him away in a squad car dont be THAT guy LOL

Been there a lot.
My favorites are ChinaTown and Little Italy. Have only been once since 9 1 1. It was still a mess then and we did not spend much time down there. Wall Street and the fresh market are pretty cool.
You can get some good buys in ChinaTown on Canal Street where all the open shops are, and everything is negotiable. Little Italy is right there also. Just a couple blocks away. Good food there too.
Used to go there a lot when in college also and even in the 70's, all the people are not what they sem.
Some of those trannies are very hard to spot. Be real careful if you guys are up for trying to pick up some chix.
Have fun but just be careful. Keep your eyes open and you will be OK
