All of the rosewoods share an oil that in micro-dust particles can effect you like poison ivy. The danger comes if you are allergic because turners are more likely to inhale the micro dust. Most are not effected, but most turners are familiar with dust that gives you a little hack cough. When I was young and invincible I didn't use a respirator.

Favorite wood: black locust, hedge, cedar, bocate ......and abw makes a great tone board.

I've never thought of using black locust! You have any pictures of a tone board you've made from black locust? I'd love to see what it looks like. Ever used mamosa? I've been using it a little because it seems to be pretty dense and has a pretty wood grain

Do you sell your calls? Haven't seen any locally made calls other than DDT Game calls, or is that some you make?

right now we just have echo tone boards in em which is the safe way to go for now cause it's of coarse going to sound good, but I've got a few custom tone boards made now that are awesome but can't sell them cause they're still one of a kind so I have to get a jig made from them before we can sell it. I can't wait till we can start selling fully custom calls because I had a guy at the DU banquet offer 200 for one but just couldn't sell it because it was the only one like it

i thought it was more the "turner" in danger of the toxic effects and not the end user, once sealed...but i guess once you wear through the sealant, you're touching wood...

i'm assuming one would quickly know if they were affected by the toxicants?

Donia, you are right! The one turning the cocabola is the one to worry about. That stuff gets dusty and could really mess you up!! We usually wear masks and even stuff our nose with tissue paper when we are working coca. Have been told that coca is what finally got Mr. Alvin Taylor. He never wore anything when he turned it. My favorite to turn is bodoc, it is a lot less messy. Diamond wood can be a pain to,it splinters really easy and will poke your hands pretty good.
