What would be the best limit on ducks

Postby MSDuckmen » Tue Dec 11, 2001 7:42 pm

Think about it for a minute and if the Feds said OK we are going to let you kill all you want every day.

What would be your limit?

When would you say it is enough.

I'll start this off:

I would shoot no more than 8 a day.
don't know why 8 except that it is less than ten but more than the present limit.

but there would be no hens

That way all the left over drakes would have plenty of daisy duck to go around. hehe

Hey Duckmen,
I would say it would depend on where I was hunting. I think the limit right now is fine but I would kill more hens. Just kidding.I think 6 is good but it should be restructured as to what can be killed.

i kind of like six because it makes you choose what you shoot and limits you in the same sense. we only kill big ducks anyway so we either kill mallards, pintails or widgeon or gadwalls. we pass up others just because anyone can kill teal or shovlers or the otherfast flyers.

I am happy with the current 6 but I would like to see the number of Woodies and Pintails, Canvasback ect. increase also I like the idea about decreasing the number of hens.

Interesting question! Probably weird, but I'd reduce the bag by half...three ducks period with limits on scarce ducks, but no more than three of any kind. One reason...I remember the days of three duck limits and I never enjoyed hunting more than then. There were no crowds and people who were out there were a whole lot nicer to each other. It was nothing for people to bump into each other in the woods and hook up to hunt, just to make new friends and share a sport we love. Perhaps, those who are not dyed in the wool duck hunters would give it up and it would only be those of us who would do it for one duck would be out there. More ducks is not the answer to happinesss in the sport. But, as long as we're talking pipe dreams......I'll take fewer ducks in the bag and a better crowd hunting them.

Crow

You are the man, I knew there was someone out there that felt the same as I do. Like you if we were told the limit would be this from now on forever, three is the number.

8? Duckmen, you fall off your rocker? We've attracted enough attention to this sport as it is.

I agree with crow the numbers are not really my concern. The whole experience is whats important. I would vote for 3 or 4 bird limits from here on out.

I also like six but I would like it to say only six ducks with only two being hens. Many times I have gone hunting early in the season before the big ducks have come down this far, and only returned home with two wood ducks.

I was thinking 5 with only 1 hen, we don't want to overpopulate them, but, I also would rather have a lower limit and a longer season say a 4 duck limit (1 Hen), and a two week longer season...Just my 2 cents.

Crow has the right answer IMHO. Only 1 hen shoud be allowed. A longer season may be possible with that kind of limit. I know all you "southerners" will just say there are no ducks till mid Dec anyway, but it would be nice to have a longer season. There are some years when the ducks move down earlier and if the sason was open at least we would have a chance. Ca. should not be the only place that has a long season.

I would only kill three to four a day. Last year I hunted twenty days an averaged 4 ducks a hunt. My freezer was full an the main reason that I hunt is to eat them and gets me out of the city. My wife was sick of me cooking ducks by March. I agree that the hens should go down by one.

4 Duck Limit.

3 Mallards, only 1 hen. All three can be drakes.
1 Pintail
3 Gadwalls
2 Widgeon
1 Redhead
3 Woodies (takes three to make a good dressin')
4 Teal
4 of any diver, but whose gonna waste their shells on them, except them cajuns
, just kidding boys.

That would be my bag. But I shoot them limit at 6 till they change it.

4 ducks per gun on puddle ducks and only 1 mallard hen. No season at all on black ducks. Don't know much about the divers.

Another rule I would implement: No hunting past 12:00 noon.

Too bad I ain't the King of USA.

My vote is for a four duck limit and a season starting November 1st and ending Jan. 31st.
