best call for a new caller

Postby rhill14 » Fri Mar 18, 2011 11:07 pm

Hey guys, ive been hunting for a while and its time for me to start calling and stop relying on my buddies to call. I got a cheap call from bass pro, i think its a quackhead?. I can do basic quacks and put the sequence together pretty good so i would like to get a nice call to keep learning on. Im willing to spend 100-150 on a nice single reed call. What is a call that can really be used in most all situations? Mainly hunt out of a pit, blind or on a boat. Eiter open water or flooded rice fields? Youl got any suggestions? I searched and came up with some pretty varied opinions so thought i would ask. Also anyone got any tips on working on a feeding call cant seem to get that down. THanks

my vote is an echo xlt. plenty of volume for what you need it for and can do it all, but I'm an echo guy

Gumbo G1 has the lows and the highs covered. Plenty of top end volume but not a geto blaster. Tica Tica Tica on the feed call.

I would start with a good mid-toned call in acrylic or maybe an african blackwood. Mayday MT, Dixieland Rogue, Echo xlt, RNT Orginal, etc.

My favorite is the RNT Short Barrel.

If interested I have the redleg I let go of. :D

For a new caller? Echo diamondwood poly double reed. You won't win contests, but you will kill ducks. $45.
Never assume.

+1 on the Haydel redleg, very ducky and easy to operate.

DR-85 and any reputable whistle...both for under $35

Leave the big money calls at home...trust me

Wood calls have a smoother tone in my opinion...MallardTone, Faulks etc.
MANY dux have been turned with an OLT-D2

You've got two choices. Make yourself a better caller by learning how to run a single reed or take the easy route and go with a double. A double reed call already has the duck in it. All you have to do is put air into it. It takes out all the guesswork of trying to figure out how to blow a call correctly.

As for a single reed, Echo Timber would be my first choice.

There are different variations of the feed. It all depends on what you say into the call.

I've been around this joint for going on 7 years. There are a lot of things that have changed, a lot of things that are uncertain. However one thing that has not changed, is GH22's stance on single vs. double. That dude is adamant about that.

It's because I learned the hard way. I was in that double reed funk for about 8 years til I made myself learn how to blow a single. It's easier to start on a single than going from double to single. The double creates a lot of bad habits.

I like the RNT for beginners.. It is easy to blow... I leared on a Buck Gardener call in one of his Call/CD packages.. Just practiced to and from work in the truck.

I would learn the right way on a single reed. I made the mistake of learning on a double reed and will say to this day it messed me up. It created bad habits that I revert back to if Im not careful, or I end up over compensating for them.
