I talked with our associate minister who has been working with the family over the last 2 weeks, he said he is really not sure what is going on with the family, just that there seems to be some inconsistencies in their story and always some type of issue as to why they can't get things together. He wasn't sure if this is because they are embarrased, or concerned the church would judge them or just what the issues are. He said he told them that the church can't support thier financial needs all together but that the church could continue to help them spiritually and emotionally and networking to help land jobs. But there is a legitimate need for help especially when 4 kids are involved and the parents have no jobs. The parents appear to want to work, and when I visited with them yesterday there were no signs of abuse or neglect. The kids were polite and well spoken and seemed to be well educatated. I told our associate minister that some of you all wanted to help and that I would take anything that came to me and funnel it through him in the form of gift cards so that we can make sure the money goes for needs for the kids. He said he was going to continue to work with them to find out how and what we could do. I hope to see the family again tomorrow night and will let you know what I find out.

So to re-bump this to the top the current prefernce is gift cards is that correct? I refuse to go to Wal-Mart granted this would likely be the best place, but I just can't bring myself to spend money there and support that place. Any other place that would work? A grocery store?

I'll see what I can do about a job tomorrow for him. I will also talk to my SS class at church about helping.

I learned some interesting news last night. My wife went up to see her Dad and Step mom in the hospital and while talking with her dad found out that this family had called him several weeks ago needing a ride up to their church (which is different than ours). My father in law put in a call to the benevolance coordinator and they said they needed help with food and shelter, but the family never did make it to church there. This was about 3-4 weeks ago, and about the same time they started to come to our church. So at this point I am not sure what to make of this. I am not sure if the my Father-in-laws church couldn't or wouldn't help since they are so much smaller than our church, or if the family is going from church to church looking or handouts. I guess at some point when you have 4 kids and no jobs handouts are what you need, but I don't want to be enabling someone that has no intent on helping themselves. I hope to see the family at church tonight and hope to have some more information. I hate to see the family go into a shelter or have worse to have to split up to go into two different shelter and can't stand the thought of kids living out of a van. So right now lets put this on hold till I gather some more information. I have got some PMs already about "checks in the mail" so when I get them I will hold them until I have some more info. I don't want to give them money/gift cards and food just to have them move on to another place and do the same thing with another church. I want them to stay and build a relationship and try to get thier life back on track.

My heart is absolutely broken for those kids. Cwink, I totally trust your judgment. I don't even mind being taken advantage of as long as those kids get to eat and have clothes. Let me know.

Glad you're being cautious, Chad. I've seen similar situations like this before where when you offer them a job, they will find some excuse not to take it.

Thanks guys.. I got a call from the lady yesterday, they said they were out looking for jobs after going up to the WIN job center. I also talked with our associate minister and he said he talked with them today and said they had filled out out some job applications as well and they were hoping for some call backs. So hoping they can find a job and then it will be much easier to help them once we know they are trying to help themselves.

please keep us updated Chad as I am still more than willing to help if you deem it a good cause still. OF course when kids are involved it's never a bad cause. I'll hang up and listen.

Any headway in this? Good for you CWink for trying (and succeeding) in helping.

Did the kids ever enroll in school?
I think it is ultimately up to the district (school) if they accept them or not, but there are many "homeless" in JPS now. There is money set up for this as well.

McKinney-Vento
Homeless Assistance Act
Title X, Part C
$69,150.23
Title X, Part C ensures the provision of services to homeless children and youth including preschool-age children that enable these children and youth to enroll, attend, and succeed in school. These services provide before or after school tutoring, supplemental instruction and enriched educational activities.
If it doesn't work out there will never be any doubt that the pleasure was worth all the pain.
