This is quite possibly one of the most interesting threads on ducksouth-ever.

Some beech? Somewhere?

No, water oak was not recommended. Beech was never mentioned.

Now it seems that the rabbits are "suckling" my sugarberry trees. Only 2 weeks after planting and the terminal buds and most twigs on nearly every sugarberry tree I see has been clipped or skinned.

Why was water oak not recommended? Was it because of the site factor or wildlife? I always thought water oak was a preferred species by wildlife.

My forester recommended nuttall and overcup with a hint of willow oak on the higher ground. I think willow and water grow in about the same zone but he really leaned toward nuttall and overcup for their tolerance to saturated soils like pond bottoms. I planted the top two rows around the levee slopes in cherrybark and swamp chestnut and a few sawtooth in select locations. I put the sugarberry, maple, willow oak and persimmon on the better drained ponds and upper ends of others. I put the bitter pecan and overcup in the lowest spots and nuttall on the rest.
