I'll bet the "hybrid" is a clipped australian shoveler, but bring on the pics just for kicks so someone can say I'm wrong.

Mottled duck but they usually have a greener tint to their speculum.. Maybe a second generation mottled mallard cross?
Re: What kind of duck is this
what time of year was the pic taken?
Re: What kind of duck is this

And a mottled duck's speculum isn't bordered with white strips like a mallard's.
The two loudest sounds in the world are a BANG when you expect a CLICK and a CLICK when you expect a BANG.
Re: What kind of duck is this
they will have a faint white tip on the speculum (i have killed 100's of them here in mobile and LA) but i didn't notice the white patch on the top the first time i looked at it...what it looks like to me is a mallard in its summer plumage... but if this is taken in the winter time i don't know... maybe some lack of plummage??

Re: What kind of duck is this
I killed a bird last week IDENTICAL to this one. Couldn't of been a black. Damn sure didn't look like a mallard. As far as a mottled goes it didn't resemble one. I don't really know what it was so I called it a unique mallard. Instead of hangin' out on the wall it is hangin' out in the septic tank.

Re: What kind of duck is this
I was thinking mallard at first but there were some other mallards feeding close to this duck and they didnt look anything alike. It has characteristics of a mallard, black, and mottled so i dont have a clue.
It was taken in July
Here is a couple pics of the other duck, guess it could be a hen australian shoveler but i cant find a good pic of one. What do yall think?
