How many people would....

Postby Wingman » Sat Jun 19, 2010 8:11 pm

disk this and throw out some millet?

Image

I'll bet there are many who would. This is a pond drained in late January and this picture is at eye level.

What you see here is red rooted flatsedge (which is capable of producing 2,000 lbs/acre of seed), wild millet (which is capable of producing about 1,500 lbs/acre of seed), smartweed (which can be a great food source for ducks if you have the higher yielding annual types, sesbania (also known as coffeweed which has little food value for ducks) and cattail (which has little food value for ducks but can provide cover and food for invertebrates which ducks eat).

The sesbania and cattail can and will dominate at which point they should be controlled by various methods. This pond will be disked partially next summer to facilitate the planting of trees on 2/3's of it. More than likely the following spring the moist-soil portion will be disked to set back succession and to control the cattail.

Just an example of what results you can get with water management and knowing how to manage for good plants that feed ducks. In my case, it's what happened without me doing anything more than dropping the water level.

chit, a many of ducks can be killed over wild grass seeds. they eat it just like any other grains. that can be just as effective as rice or beans. bottom line is you ain't got ducks it don't matter what's planted, which has been the case for many folks the last couple years.

for exmaple you could kill a 4 greenheads (two banded), a mallard/black cross, and a mallard/gaddy cross and smash a hot blonde on the way back to the ramp and call it a hell of a day
and THAT is a duck hunt.

You sure that is not yellow nut sedge?

That is a good looking buffett! It seems like most good moist soil happens by accident rather than design. To the untrained eye, it doesn't look like much but a lot duck use days can be had in that impoundment.

Your picture is a great snapshot in time showing one years density ratio of certain plant varieties...
When I (my amateur self :) ) look at that, I'm thinking I love that diversity but in a year or two those cattail and coffeeweed may dominate this place because they are so prolific (each one of those cattail seed heads holds a gajillion seeds). But on the other hand, I see the sedge and I remember that it is very aggressive too!!

So to try and answer your question of disking or not... I suppose at your hunting spot I would wait another season or two to see how the natural plant battle goes. I make this judgment each season on my place... thats why they call it management I suppose.

Thats a great photo- thanks for posting.

Look at it now. The sedges died out about late July and the smartweed and coffeeweed came on strong. Flooded in early September for teal (total bust), then a thick layer of filamentous algae took over in two 4-acre blocks on each end of the pond that were mowed and subsoiled for tree planting. The algae literally covered the entire surface of the water until a week ago when the ducks moved in.

6 foot wide lane mowed through the thick stuff.

Some great pics there Rob. I'm inspired to work harder at using the natural grasses on our place, although during a wet year we don't have the option to dewater until God gets ready for it.

If you mean how deep is the water, about a foot at the deepest. 18" is as deep as I want it but 6" works too.
