No time to put on that safety harness?

Postby Wingman » Sun Oct 10, 2010 6:40 pm

Don't worry, these guys have plenty of time to come get you.

Accident today where a man fell while putting up climbing sticks and a hang on stand in my county. Safety harness that came with the brand new, just out of the box treestand, was at the base of a nearby tree.

We always think of wearing it while in the stand, but fellas, you need to wear it going up and down, too. His arm was torn up pretty bad, not sure about any other injuries at this time.

I agree with ya. When i was younger i never even thought about them, but now that i have a child i try to wear one all the time for her sake and mine. In fact i didn't have mine this weekend and i was about 25 feet up in a very small lock on yesterday morning and started to dose off about 8 oclock and decided to climb down the tree. no animal is worth having the eat out of a straw and roll around in a wheel chair for the rest of your life.

Don't go up or down with out it when in a lock on or climber.

Don't know if that one did or not.......but most clubs over here are buying the insurance from AirEvac Lifeteam. It runs a 1000 or 1500 a year (for the club not per member)......but they'll come get you at no charge if you need them.

Always wondered what is out there in terms of "ascenders" or products that work while climbing and while coming down? I've always thought it would suck if I slipped while going up.

I just bought a 3 pack of the lifelines from Hunter Safety Systems ($100). Uses a prusic knot and slides easily up and down the main line. I feel much better using it now as I fell Labor day morning about 18 feet while hanging a lockon. I am very lucky. Google HSS lifeline for more info.

A Memphis-area taxidermist that my dad knows fell out of a treestand the other day while hanging/moving stands. He actually landed on his feet, but compressed 7 vertebrae (3 in neck and 4 in back, or vice versa, Dad wasn't sure which), and broke his femur and telescoped it up into his guts. He was air lifted out as well. Luckily his wife/girlfriend was with him to call 911. I made it to the base of my tree Sunday afternoon and realized I didn't have my safety harness and made a 25 minute round-trip walk back to the truck to get it. I have not and will not hunt from a lock-on or climber without a safety harness.

had a guy today @work that wasn't wearing his harness, so i took one up to him, before i got the 80ft back to the ground, i looked up and saw him swing from his lead. the board he was sitting on while working slipped while he was making a repair. fella told me at lunch that he'da never believed it woulda happened to him, he wouldn't let me pay for my lunch.

be careful of those accenders with the pusic knots, look at the weight rating and the load ratings for the bigger guys, also check your gear before each use

Not sure. They were already loaded up and just turned on the fan when I arrived.

I got word the guy cracked three vertebrae and dang near cut his left arm off on something. He is very fortunate he did not bleed to death while waiting for help.

When I was younger I thought safety harness was stupid but after having a child and a family I realize they are worth every penny they cost!

GUys this is an important issue. It seems now that we all know somebody personally that has fallin or had a close call. I had some free time on my hands the other day and timed my self climbing with and without the harness around the tree. It took 2 extra minutes to climb with the harness around the tree. No excuse not to use it all the time!!!
