I was told that it was "space junk" falling to Earth.
Several reports in this area of "flaming balls" falling from the sky and shaking the ground.

Not to get too deep on this subject but I have been thinking about this lately. I teach a Sunday School class for young married couples and we recently finished our study of the book of Mark. After the earthquake in Chile, I couldn't help but think of this passage. Mark 13:8, "Nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes from place to place and there will be famines. These are the beginning of the labor pains."

I don't know if there are actually more of them now than there have been in the past, or we are simply more connected than we've ever been, so we hear more about them now.

Watch good news programs or documentaries on the subject. There are fewer quakes right now than there have been over the last couple of years. There's always high magnitude quakes happening around the world but are usually in remote areas or under water. It just so happens that the fault lines that have been moving lately are in populated areas. I looked at a map the other day and it would blow your mind how many quakes there are over a week or month of time. 90+% of the flags were over water.

News media is just bored and looking for something else to try and scare the American public with. Or it could be the democratic based media is trying to draw atttention away from how terrible a job the President, which they all endorsed so strongly, is doing and focus John Q. Public on some earthquakes somewhere else in the world while Obama destroys our country right here under our noses. Wake up America its time for a revolution.

Here is a little history and predictions on our most immediate earthquake threat.

THE HIGHEST EARTHQUAKE RISK in the UNITED STATES outside the West Coast is along the New Madrid Fault. Damaging tremors are not as frequent as in California, but when they occur, the destruction covers over more than 20 times the area because of underlying geology.
A DAMAGING EARTHQUAKE in this AREA, 6.0 or greater, occur about every 80 years (the last one in 1895). The results would cause serious damage to schools and masonry buildings from Memphis to St Louis.35 years overdue

A MAJOR EARTHQUAKE in this AREA, 7.5 or greater, happens every 200- 300 years (the last one in 1812). There is a 25% chance by 2040. A New Madrid Fault rupture this size would be felt throughout half the United States and damage 20 states or more. Missouri alone could anticipate losses of at least $6 billion from such an event.2 years from 200 year cycle

Plus, most insurance companies have made folks in the region that have earthquake coverage carry a higher deductible or have suspended writing coverage all together. This would suck...bad.

4.4 barely woke me this morning... I'm on the 3rd floor in my apartment complex and I get more of the "sway" and it was enough to wake me for a minute and then roll back over and go to sleep! You don't even get out of bed out here for anything under a 6.0!

with that said... I plan to be somewhere besides California come 2012 just in case! HA!

I added earthquake Insurance to my homeowners policy last Friday. It added $69/year to my policy. It seems like they're happening all over the world now. It might be worth checking your policies to make sure it's on there.
