Hogs
Hogs
I am wanting to bring some guys down from Missouri after deer season to hunt on Private land in south Mississippi (trade for turkey hunting), but can we legally hunt hogs then and what does a non resident need license wise to hunt then?

Re: Hogs
You can hunt hogs year round. I don't know what license you're required to get for that....i'm sure it's on the mdwfp.com.
Re: Hogs
only thing about hog hunting is you are regulated as to what weapon u can carry, by what season is open.
So, if it is still rabbit season, you are stuck to rabbit approved firearms.
If there are no hunting seasons open, no weapon restrictions.
This is how it was explained to me, i could be wrong.

Re: Hogs
Cuz you need to contact the Jackson office of MDWFP......your first route would be to get a depredation permit. Get it from the people who will be strokin your guest a ticket if you do it wrong
Life's too damned complicated to make it too damned complicated
Re: Hogs
i talked to them at the district 6 office and they said march the 1st we were good to go on private lands. Just have to purchase a nonresident hunting license.

Re: Hogs
I may be wrong on this and please correct me if I am, but i thought on private lands it was open year round and whichever weapon you chose, but on public it was only open when another season was open and weapons were limited to whichever you could use for that game.
Re: Hogs
They guy I talked to at the district office said that we could hunt them with whatever weapon was legal at that time up until the close of deer season on the 15th. Then when it closes we can hunt them with a 22 until the end of rabbit season, but on March the first they were legal to hunt with whatever.

Re: Hogs
You have to a weapon that is legal for what ever season is open.
You can't convince a game warden that you are hog hunting with a 30-06 durring bow season.
Still applies to other seasons.

Re: Hogs
Yeah , I thougt it was that way during turkey season too. Once there is no legal season open then you can hunt with any weapon. Also then you are allowed to hunt them at night with a light, i think thats right.

+1 What he said.
Technically you dont need a permit after March 1 and can use any firearm, but if you night huntin I bet the local CO would feel better if you had permit in hand.

You can hunt at night with a light but you are restricted to a 17 or a 22 or a shotgun with 6 shot or better. You aren't allowed to carry a 22 mag. During turkey season you can't hunt with dogs. I know its true on public and pretty sure same rule applies on private but not 100%. Use a knife. It takes all of the worry out of it.

On private land you can hunt them with whatever you want unless its large game season. Rabbits, turkeys, other small game dont matter.
