Float hunting

I may get dragged over the coals for this but here goes. My hunting this year has been pretty poor just like everyone elses. With the hard freeze coming on this week I am thinking of a new plan. I have private access to a certain river, no not the one i live on, that usually has ducks on it late in the year like now, especially with all the oxbows around it frozen sollid. With that being said what are the legallities of floating this river and shooting birds within the normal stage channel of the river not under any power.

I am not an expert on the laws but my understanding is that your ok if you are within the normal channel. I employed that method years ago on a certain narrow river and it is very effective during frozen conditions. I just makes for a long day sometimes but it can be fun. Just make sure your motor cranks when you get to the end of your float. Back then we didn't have cell phones to call a buddy.

It is my understanding that the motor must be off and all forward motion from the motor must be stopped, you must be under the power of the flowing current only. Just because your motor is off does not mean you are legal. If you are in a boat that has no external power and you are paddeling you are legal. Again this is my understanding. I often float a couple of rivers after the morning hunt also, it can be productive at times.

I had a kid about shoot my head off shooting at a woodie. They ran up into some willows I was walking behind, shut the motor off, and immediately started blasting. That's some kind of illegal.
