Things found in the woods....

Postby dukluk » Tue Dec 29, 2009 12:25 am

This was an interesting conversation, recently among some of us hunters at camp....through the years, I've found arrowheads, birthday balloons, a flashlight, an old washpot, numerous old snuff bottles, and a dog collar....anyone found something really interesting???

I have found 4 cars in creeks this year while scouting.

I found a bowling PIN in the TN river. Did not know they would float.

It was not far from where they found the boot with a sock and FOOT still in it!!! The guy fell in and went thru the turbines OUCH. All they found was the foot.

I found the hood to a 46 Ford truck, and two lone tombstones about 2 miles from any road the death date were 1897 and 1905.

I have never found anything very interesting besides a balloon or arrowhead. there was a 15 page thread on Archery talk about this. It is amazing how many folks have found dead bodies

My Grandfather and Great uncle went to Panther Swamp to Squirrel hunt. Walking in the woods, they found a man in his mid forties crying. He had been lost for 3 days. This was in the mid 60's. He had lost his gun, had no water, or food. They sat with him until the sun came up and sent him to the truck. They continued hunting and when they got thru they took him to his truck.

Found some old bottles around old house sites. Bout the best thing i found was last year while turkey hunting. Found where my nephew was stashing his beer in the woods. Two free cases of bud light out of that one.

As a surveyor, I've come across a lot of interesting items while in the woods for both work and pleasure. some of my most interesting are -

the body of an old hand carved duck decoy
a spearhead
a truck that washed down from Illinois in the flood of '73
a bandoleer (sp) of 20 ga. shells with a knife
Nobody owes you anything.

Have found arrow heads, old cars, an abandoned refrigerator, and some other interesting stuff in the woods over the years, but the best was when I found a stolen truck stashed in our field a few years ago. The weeds were about 10-12 high that year, but I noticed a glint of light in the middle of the weedy field and went out to investigate with my 870 loaded with 00 buck. Came up on the truck and thought someone was poaching deer and had stashed the truck. I was so nervous, I about wet myself as I realized someone could be up a tree with a scope aimed at my head. Headed out of the woods and called the sheriff. Two deputies showed up and we drove down into the field in a caravan, and then I followed the deputies into field. They were loaded for bear, and we were all nervous. We made it to the truck and a deputy confirmed the truck had been stolen from a local farm a month or so before and was apparently stashed in the field. Further examination showed a shower curtain rod jammed between the gas pedal and the headrest so I guess the perps decided to send it into the field until it finally got stuck and ran out of gas. I'll try to find a picture I took of the patrol cars in the field and the tow truck coming out of the field with the truck.

I found an old moon shine still and a lot of jugs that had been abandoned for many many years...I was probably only about 12 or 13 and out squirrel hunting by myself with a 22. that was the mid nineties.

Found an old refrigerator from probably the 70's.

Bout 10 years ago I found a dog fighting ring, and pit bull grave yard with probably 10 pit bull skeletons, and 2 decomposing pit bulls. The 2 that were decomposing were stuck in a pet porter kennel together and just covered by a few branches to "hide it".

A few years ago while working in St. Helena Parish, found about 10 live marijuana plants, as well as about 20 stalks that had been cut. They were all in the small, black plastic containers you get when you buy flowers and plants from the nursery. Had a small container of plant fertilizer. Took a few pictures and left.

Called the sheriff and never found out what happened.

Sat down one day next to a big ole oak and my hand got stuck by something. It was an old Case knife. I imagined some guy sittin gdown there years before, maybe cleaning his nails with the knife, deer walked up he dropped the knife to shoot and forgot it.

In college in alabama I was out by a waterfall and was walking the creek bed. In the side of the creek I found 2 sets of large quartz crystals. One has 3 on it and are about 6" long and the other has 5 and the biggest is about 8" long. Or at least thats what my wife thinks is 8". :)
