Dude, recommend that you learn on a classical or country six string.
Dont expect to be Eddie Vanhalen until you build up streangth in your hands and calluses on your finger tips not to mention the ear for tuning. Check e bay, or, Walley World has a classical learner. Good luck! Long live rock....I need it everyday!!!

Dude, I learned on a classical, builds finger and forearm streangth. I loved my first electric (Les Paul) and I knew how to play it when I got it. Electrics play the same way, but, you also have to devolope an ear for sound. Trust me. If you are dead set on an electric, try garage sales, thats how I picked up my Les Paul. If "new" is you, Ibenez has a guitar amp combo at any music store for around $150. Watch your favorite music videos and learn basic bar chords. The chicks dig it too
Have a nice day!

Guitar
I've been playing for many years. Some have advised you to get a classical guitar, others a country six string, etc. Find a guitar that will play the type of music you love. If you enjoy rock n roll get a good electric so you can play what you enjoy listening to. If you dont, you may become bored with a classical guitar and end up putting it down and not playing it. My advice is to buy a good electric if you are seriouse about learning. A good guitar will be adjustable so that you can get the string height fairly low so that it will be easire for you to fret the strings and allow you to make chords and notes sound good. There is nothing more frustrating than playing a crappy instrument that is difficult to make good sounds out of and more so for the beginner. I have had many guitars, they have come and gone but two Fender stratocasters have seemed to hang around. I just cant bring myself to sell them even though the next newest coolest guitar comes around. Try to cough up a few dollars and get a good Fender, Gibson, Ibeneze or other reasonably good playing electric and start learning to play some of your favorite rock songs. Dont go buy a walmart special if you can help it(POS). If all I had was a classical guitar, it would probably be collecting dust. Instead I'm playing AC/DC, Zepplin, Audio Slave, Rage, Hendrix, etc. Good luck, hope you find a good electric.
