Re: Who uses a recurve to hunt with?
I hunt with one. I shoot it several time a week.
I can shoot it well from 25 yards in. i practiced nearly everyday for about 1 1/2 years. and a month before the season i will shoot 40-60 arrows several times a week.
Recurves can be found very reasonable, 100-200 bucks for a good used one. If you think you can shoot a 60lb bow, get a 50lb. I shoot a Fred Bear Kodiak and its a 55lbs and i shoot it ok, i have a 50lb grizzly that i shoot way better. Go to some traditional bow shoots and you can find some to buy. I have a friend who builds them. He builds great bows, longbows and TD recurves.
I can hook you up with him if your intersted.

I use one. I have an old kodiak and it pulls about 47 pounds. I'm very comfortable out to 20 yards. As far as how long it takes to get good with it, it all depends how much you practice with it. I would look on eBay for an old bear and start with that. They keep their value pretty good so you can always get your money out of it

I shoot one as well. To me it is more fun to shoot than a compound. I shoot a Huntersmoon archery t/d recurve at about 58lbs. You definitely have to practice a lot more. I shoot pretty much everyday. Arrow choice is fairly important you need to match your arrows to your bow.
Re: Who uses a recurve to hunt with?
Is there any harm that can be done by practicing with both a compound and recurve?
Re: Who uses a recurve to hunt with?
not that I know of. I shoot both when I practice. compunds these days are like rifles with a scope. but the dot on whatever you want and it is dead. I haven't noticed any drawbacks from using both at the same time.

Not to go into great detail, but my hunting set up on my compound is complex and I cant really target shoot at the camp with my buddies when they shoot. I would like to get a recurve so I can join in and maybe one day I could possibly get good enough to hunt with it. I want to spend about $300 for a full set up, bow and arrows.

Dawg........you'll been holding out on me..I didn't know you shoot from the dark side?
Bigpoppa....you can spend anywhere from $60 ( material cost when you make your own) to $1600 for a custom. Price range for a Custom used is 1/2 of original $ is good deal...Pawn Shops are great places but be careful of twisted limbs.
It takes alot of practice to be proficient with one. There are 2 schools basically of shooting. Instinctive and Sight.................I shot Instintive for 30 years, now i just shoot sight ( gun baralleling it) as of this spring...You would be using a whole different muscle shooting trad so buy your first bow 45#-50. NO HEAVIER.
Ups.......Definitely fun to shoot. You will want to shoot 365 days a year. K.I.S.S principle is important. Grip and rip...You do not need a hunting store mechanic for this tackle. You will even make your own strings. Very easy to shoot in all kind of body positions..Great snap shooting implement. The simplicity is contagious.
Downs....bow range is 25 yards and in.......you'll here stories of so and so killing a deer at 50 yards with a longbow.. There is No telling how many deer So and So wounds too...It's a 25 and in sport...You basically have to get closer to the deer to kill it.
Go to Tradgang.com.....it is the mega for Traditional Bowhunters...
If you are ever in Oxford, i would be glad to let you shoot a bow or too and give you a quick lesson.

Yall got me fired up. I havent had time to look or put my hands on one. Got a funeral and bunch of work issues but may look at some saturday. I am not seeing a lot of deals on ebay and i am also kinda cautious about buying a used bow online. especially one i dont know crap about. If I find one on there I may post a link and let yall make the call.

I was grown up on it. Until last year, the only thing I had ever seen my dad shoot was a recurve. I mostly use my compound, but there are a couple places I hunt that the furthest shot is 20 yards and is perfect for my recurve. Im just waiting on you to let me buy one off of you.

Re: Who uses a recurve to hunt with?
I grew up shooting recurves and long bows.. I got really good with a 40lb long bow.. Rabbits and bullfrogs where Dead on site with the old long bow.. I moved to compound with no sights later on and killed a nice Merino Ram on a hunt down in Laredo when I was about 14... I still have a couple of my Dad and my Uncle's recurve one is a Bear 72lb... You gotta be a man to pull that thing back.. .

Re: Who uses a recurve to hunt with?
I got a recurve last year and thought that I would be good enough with it to take it hunting right away. WRONG!!! Much more difficult (for me) to shoot accurately. It is a lot of fun to shoot though, and I might be confident enough to take it deer hunting with me this year. Will definitely take it turkey hunting next spring. As stated before, you can buy a good used recurve on Ebay for cheap. I would start there or archerytalk or bowsite classifieds.
