Anyone have a wet suit?

Postby duckhuntalot » Tue Jan 06, 2004 3:01 pm

Buddies of mine dumped their boat. Need to look for some guns. Can anyone help me out? I would drive a reasonable distance to borrow the thing. Antique gun at the bottom.

Wetsuit

They wouldn't happen to be the group of three that I saw at Matthews last week that flipped their boat? They were trying everything to locate those last two guns that fell out.

I have a huge magnet that my grandfather used to put on the front bumper of a farm truck to suck up nails in the gravel fishpond levees.

It has been used to retrieve a gun.

Let me know and I'll get it ready.

flipped boat

Postby A5 » Wed Jan 07, 2004 9:14 am

The three at Matthews went down when they tried to pile in about 500 pounds of themselves into a little aluminum boat that was probably rated for around 300 lbs. They said the bow went under first, and as it did they had the sense to immediatly flip the boat over so that they could get some air underneath so that it wouldn't completely go down. When I saw them they were dragging an anchor around trying to snag two guns that were on the bottom. The only gun that was saved was in floating gun case. It looked like a bad situation. Hope they find the guns.

That reminds me to the "Titanic Story". Three guys in a 13ft john boat coming out across the Pearl river, two on the bough horsing around. They were bouncing the bough up and down and cought a wave. They said it looked like the Titanic going down.

I have several wetsuits and will be going thru Greenwood Friday. Better still I have a friend that goes to Kosciusko daily. If I were you I would try a dry suit rather than a wet suit. Polartec plus a wet suit will work.

Yes they were the three in the overloaded boat with the amatuer driving. It is a father son and friend trio. What a friend (driver) to sink your boat. I heard about it yesterday when he stopped by the office. Said it shook his Dad up pretty good.

Contrary to what they may have said, flipping the boat was only a result of his Dad rolling over the side. They are lucky!

He said they warned several people at the landing about the overturned boat. Said one group (two guys and a girl) left the landing rode by the wreckage and picked up two of his life vests and kept going (I asked him why they were not wearing them...his response.... we've been in that boat a hundred times.... typical isn't it) Another two other boats stopped by to pick up several of the brand new wood duck decoys he was sporting. The rest of the dozen either are still floating or got picked up.

His Dad has an antique gun that is a family heir loom, thought I would try to help him retrieve the gun if possible.

I am not sure if you understand what you are asking to get into. First, cold water. Do not get into it unless you are experienced. You need TWO divers, so one will not be down alone. Don't know the depth or temp. Whatever temp it is, a diver in a wet suit would have a hard time staying down very long. That is very strenuous.

As far as wetsuits, you would need 7mm full body wetsuit and a hood and gloves and booties. And scuba gear.

As far as search and recovery at depth in muddy water, those divers say they just basically go down and crawl a grid and go by feel alone. You can't see sheit.

I am a fairly competent rec. diver and that search in that dirty, cold water is way out of my league. If it is worth hiring a search and recovery certified diver, or a commercial diver, that is what you should do. I know someone here who did that for the navy, then commercially who might think that it would be fun. I am not sure if he dives anymore because of all he has been through. Airplane crashes in the ocean, nuclear plants, rivers, etc. I'll call him if you want and give me the details.

Do not think you can put on a wetsuit and find a gun at the bottom. You stand a good chance of need ing search and recovery for you!

Meeka the water depth in teh area is around seven feet deep. Don't know if I would try to dive myself. I touched base with Wingman to check on the magnet. Thanks
