Strange Band Recovery

Postby SoftCall » Sun Dec 28, 2003 8:10 pm

I was hunting a lake this past Friday that I had shot a banded greenhead on the previous Sunday. When I was setting out decoys, I heard some splashing in the willows behind me. When I investigated, I saw a greenhead that was obviously trapped. I waded over to free the bird and noticed hay bailing twine tangled around the bird and the willows. I untangled the twine from the willows and then picked up the bird. When I reached to untangle the twine from the duck's foot, I noticed the band. The twine was tangled in the band and the duck had broken it's leg trying to free itself. I would have taken the band and released the bird but I added it to my strap instead because it was suffering.

I would have much rather shot the bird over decoys, but I'll take the band and the story to boot.

Someone PM on how to post the pic and I'll do so.

You've gotta host the pic on a website somewhere. Send to my email and I'll put it up for you if you want.

Cool softcall:

Wildfowler better watch out, you're gonna catch him on the bands if you keep that pace up; 2 in a week. :D .

Kinda funny, what'd it take 20 years to get your first one?

And people wonder why I hate it when they throw their chicken boxes out the window. I waded out in one of my duckholes the other day on my knees in foot deep mud and water to retrieve a garbage can. Then I picked up beer cans and bottles, diapers, plastic bags, laundry detergent bottles and other crap that countless slobs throw out or dump off because they're too lazy to dispose of it properly.

You ought to fly over the Yazoo south of Greenwood after a big rain. It is a gigantic trash flow coming down that river. Think about it: a coke bottle on the side of the road washes into the road ditch. That flows down to the canal, to the smaller rivers, to the Mississippi and then to the Gulf. Before you realize it, typical Delta road trash is an international traveler.

Littering is a ticketable offense. How much is the fine I wonder?

Tangled in the band

Postby Deltaduckhunter » Tue Dec 30, 2003 9:54 pm

January 1992 I walked up on a mallard hen in a flooded milo field. She had a "red vine" through the notch in her band. Obviously she had swam around so many times that the vine was twisted like rope. She was almost starved to death. I had to use my pocket knife on the vine it was twisted to tightly. I put her out of her misery. I still have the band.
Just stop and look at that.... now tell me there is no God.
