talk2me suzy.....How many decoys do you regularly use all together?
Re: Spinners/Roto-ducks
When I was a young buck, way before roto-duck days, my buddy and I would haul out over 100 deeks into the marsh. This is out on public lands. There would be "decoy wars" and mad dashes to the hot spots.
Now a days, I just want to relax and shoot a few ducks without a lot of effort. I even go in the afternoon when there is not much competition, and usually less ducks to shoot at, but that is ok if we are able to get a few shots in and give the dogs a bit of a work out.
Then came the flat bottom boat with the long-tail marsh motor. It allowed us to get to the great mallard hunting back in the shallow sandy sloughs. But then word got out and everyone and his little brother had mud motors and the place got very crowded again. Now I hear that my long-tail is a dinosaur, eventhough it will get me out there. The best set-up I hear is the Pro Drive motor, but I suppose I will get opposing views to those who like the Mud Buddy Heper Drives.
Now my decoy set up is a couple dozen dekes and two spinners. The spinner frames and support poles are made of steel oval plate is plastic. I think that I can easily cut the weight in half by making the spinner frames and support poles out of aluminum and cut the battery to 3 amp-hrs instead of using 7amp-hr batteries. I may switch to a dozen dekes and 4 spinners.
I know set-ups depend on the area you hunt, but what are you all using for set-ups and in what situations?

just a dozen decoys.. spread them out and make a shape like an ear of corn. then put your 48 spinners around the decoys in a j shaped pattern according to where the sun is. it wont work unless the wings are rotating away from the sun.
Re: Spinners/Roto-ducks
Ah, so...a ring around the decoys, eh? You musta shot over 500 quackers this season with a "corny" set like that.

Yea, I admit it...we're a bit strange out here in Caifornia...But I have been able to travel a bit...you all have some interesting habits, too.
I was on back woods road construction and this good ol' boy taught me about "DuPont spinners" for trout fishing...I said, "Go fishing?..Huh? Dupont spinner??" Right then that crazy sonna B pulled out a stick of dynamite, lit it and tossed it into the pond. I hit the the dirt and covered myself...all the while he was laughing his butt off. But, we never ate so good. That spinner brought up some delicious dinners, heh, heh...very effective.

Denlan, don't mind this bunch too much! If you aren't getting poked at a bit, you're not one of us!
Where you from in Californicate? Hunted once around the sunken buttes. That anywhere near you?
