It will keep a hole open close to the well, but it will also be fog around where it keeps the hole open from the difference in temp of the water. It will look like a hot tub at least thats been my experience.

Does the ole "pull a board out of the riser" trick work to keep the water flowing and not frozen? Anybody ever tried this?

From my experience no. A small outboard running all night will keep a hole open.

trolling motors will running all night will work too, seen folks use small go devils also. Any sump pump will work with the right length of hose, just like you use to pump out a pit. Ice eaters work best

In the rice fields put some metal drums with good bottoms and build several hot fires in each (Old Days)...
You can build ice eaters for about $100 like they use up north around marinas and run a few off a generator all night...
Poly pipe well water to a hole that you break open (temporary)...
Run the pumps...

The best all-around method:

GO FIND OPEN WATER OR CURRENT WHERE THE BIRDS ARE AND HUNT THERE

Nothing was going to keep a hole open in last nights temps. maybe something, but nothing listed above.
Sound familiar?

And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground-everything that has the breath of life in it, they will be your food.
