12-6 hunt

No limits here, but fun hunt non the less.

Ended day with 3 woodies, 2 gadwall, 2 mallards and 3 honkers. Came mighty close to bringing out a wild hog but
even with 3 inch steel shot at less than 10 yards, those things are mighty tuff to kill. Had dogs running hogs around
us all morning. We heard the dogs bay one early. About 30 minutes later we had a apprx 175 lbs hog walk up on us
at about 7 or 8 yards I estimate. We both unloaded with the bead right on his head. He squeeled once and hauled booty
the other way. We tracked him but he never checked up. Wish we could have recovered him....would have been some
good eatin.

The Canadians were a nice bonus at least. Made the hunt pretty interesting. Biggest one weighed in at 15lbs.
one about 12 lbs and I didn't weight the third one so not sure what he went. All three pretty big birds.

We thought about taking buckshot in with us for next time. I know it's lead shot, but no one I know of would shoot
a duck or goose with it so you think we could get away with taking 2 or 3 in with us? My luck that would be the only
day that I would run into the GW. The slug might be a better idea. Surely they would know thats what it was for after
you told the story and would let you slide with that.

One thing I did notice from Saturday mornings hunt is that the birds in the area I'm hunting were awfully call, gun, and decoy shy. I would have birds working decoys and someone a mile away would shoot. The birds would flare and never look back. I finally put my call in my pocket cause several groups wanted no part of it. I know it wasn't my calling because it wasn't every group that did it. Just seems awefully early for birds to be this gun/decoy shy. Anyone else seeing birds being really really skidish early in the season?

I use to always take a slug or two with me, for hogs and deer. I have seen some deer when duck hunting that would block the sun. I will just take my chance with not getting checked. Kind of like taking a pistol while bowhunting. I always pack while bowhunting.

Thing is also make sure you have an orange vest in your blind bag..... If you do kill a deer or hog, you will need it or get a ticket or hunting with out orange. BTW I know it is illegal to do what I am talking about, and I do not recommend that anyone do this with the expectation of it not getting them in trouble with the Game Warden if caught. But then again it is also illegal to shoot a deer or hog with steel shot #2's also..... Pick your medicine...

Very illegal to have buckshot cause they are lead and they are hell on geese. Ol timers always talked bout number 4 buck workin that booty on geese. Hevishot t's would kill a hog

Please quote your source on where it is illegal to shoot a hog or deer with steel shot. There isn't a caliber restriction in Mississippi for deer and hogs are a nuisance animal, that's the first I've heard it being illegal to kill a deer with steel, ethics are a whole nother story though! I would say it would be unethical unless very close but not illegal unless perhaps on a wma but I have been wrong before. I would like to see the rule on it for personal knowledge. I know we've covered in depth the no caliber restrictions except on certain management areas etc.
