Geese moving

Postby GulfCoast » Wed Oct 22, 2003 9:30 am

I went out to do my walk this morning and was amazed to hear geese on the seawall. I looked up and saw "V" after "V" of Canada geese heading due west along the coast. You could hear them honking the entire 6 miles I walked this morning as they continued to fly over. I have never seen anything like it down here.
So many ducks, so little time....

I saw a few Vs yesterday while I was working at the OS Harbor. They were out over the water and I just dismissed them for pelicans or cormorants. Maybe they were geese.

talked with someone in SD last week and they said the geese had starting moving through but that it has only been an average year for ducks. said they didnt have enough water. maybe that'll push em on down some.

Everyone out early this morning was standing around looking up with their jaws dropped. It was really a sight to see all those geese.

Has any one ever heard of geese navigating using the stars? I remember being at my parents house near Fort Bayou and late at night geese would fly over honking. I have heard that they use the stars but wondering how much truth is in that?

Went out yesterday to do some fishing on the Miss. River. I didnt even get to fish for looking at the ducks. I guess I saw close to 500 ducks. Mallards, Gadwalls, Teal, and a couple of Wigeon. Took some good pics as well. Just in case people didnt believe me. Going back this afternoon to see if they are still there. This is a great sign!!!!

I saw close to 300 specks last night at the corner of Pass Road and Hwy 49 in downtown Gulfport. Saw the first group at 7:11pm and throughout the next 3 hours, they came almost every 30 minutes.....Never would I think that I would see that. Every year, I see and here snows on the beach, but not specks. Saw one flock of snows and blues this morning in Orange Grove....all of the geese were heading southwest. Hope this is a good sign for all of us!

A couple good flights of specs came across Mobile yesterday evening heading your way. Damned if I didn't hear more at about 5 this afternoon headin' west.

Hey Bayou Hunter,

I might have seen your group of specks. They flew right over my house a few miles North of I-10 in Moss Point. Looked to be close to 200-300 in about 3 flights. I also counted at least 3 snows and maybe a few blues tagging along with them. I have been here since 1987 and have never seen geese over here other than a few resident canadas. My boys told me a bunch of geese flew over yesterday afternoon as well but I wasn't around to see them. Man the 21st of Nov. can't get here quick enough!

I bet that was them. Seeing those geese fired me up too. I'm going to catch up with those specs over near Gueydan in three weeks. :D

geese

Saw some myself this morning flying south, Holmes Co. MS. They were not very high so they could have been a few local birds, but those were the first that I have seen this year. Gets the blood pumping.
