Wingman. The elk use the dark timber for cover and shelter. In a good snowstorm, thats where they will bed down. The elk move in and out of the dark timber. The will also use it for traveling when they are under pressure. It is spruce and douglas fir. It kind of reminds you of an old thick pure stand of tupelo gum, down in the swamp. In the dark timber there is alot of dead snags, blowdowns, and just ancient dead trees that have fallen, it isn't always open under the canopy. Here and there will be the sporatic glade or opening, usually full of moutain mahoganny and snow berries, and sometimes aspen trees. These are the fringe areas, where there is grass and food, like forbes.
Most folks have no idea how fast you can die in those mountains, one split second of underestimating the mountain or taking it for granted, could easily be you last. And by the way, alcohol and altitude do not mix.
Colorado Elk Hunting Trip
Great read fella's. I certainly enjoyed the response. As I read them, the anticipation level tripled. I can hardly wait to leave. The turkey analogy was pretty good. As long as the bulls are vocal, then I believe they would be easier to hunt. I think if we can locate elk we can kill them, patience, patience and more patience.
I've learned that over the years chasing eastern wild turkeys. I've waited birds out all morning and pull the trigger on him at 3pm after hens slipped off.
I just hope them bears don't come into camp like they're on welfare. All I have to do is outrun the other guys in camp....

Hey Delta,
After I pack that monster out of the wilderness, I'm coming to Dundee and we's gonna have us a cookout. You go kill one of them hogs across the levee, I'll get Longleaf to brang some quail and we'll have us a hoe-down. Heck, I'll even throw ole Speckles a bone. Tell ole Rip 'em and Webfoot to stop by the Haijee in Tunica and bring the drinks!
